Water-wise Wednesday: If you see more ant activity lately it may be because they are looking for water. As temperatures rise and soil becomes dry, ants need wat...er to create the right humidity to hatch their eggs. It is helpful to identify the ant species because their biology differs, as can their management. UC Statewide IPM Program, Urban/Community has ant management tips and an ant key to help you navigate which bait solution is right for your type of ant. (It should be noted that most species are not bothersome and rarely or never are pests in the garden landscape setting.) http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/GARDEN/CONTROLS/antmanagement.html

Curious about our grape vines? Gardener Mark with the help of Henry built the arbor to test out table grapes varieties. The lovely rocks are a by-product of digging. The land at CACG is about 50% cobbles, so they lay weed-cloth and then put the cobbles down, so the weeds are kept under control. As with the cobble-house on Adams Avenue, using the cobbles is a way of showing our natural, distinctive San Diego terrain, and the grapes sure don't mind them a bit! The grapes stay b...agged until the day of harvest, generally mid-August, though some in July and some in September and harvested according to their relative sugar content per a Brixometer. Current varieties are: Seneca (Heirloom white grape seeds, has seeds, spicy taste of white gum-drops.) Delicatessen (Wine grape with strong fruity perfume of Concord and raspberries.) Golden Champion (Large exhibition clusters of golden grapes, muscat flavor, has seeds.) Joy (a new release from the University of Arkansas, large clusters of blue grapes, strong fruity flavor, seedless.) Everest (a new release from Cornell, like Concord but twice as big, and seedless.) If anyone would like some good resources for grape growing, Garden Mark provided lots of sources. You can PM us or leave a message here and we can get that to you!

There are beautiful white nectarines coming ripe on the tree behind the washing station as you enter the garden. Try one! There are details at the giving table about the variety. Just take a couple so that there’s enough for all.

Hello College Area Neigbors! PLEASE SHARE THIS! If anyone has fruit trees (or knows of neighbors that do) there is a group of San Diego State University studen...ts who need market research survey completed for their ZIP Launchpad start-up venture. They would greatly apprecaite if you could fill out this form. Their venture is designed to help reduce food waste for your communities. Here is a little bit about the problem we are exploring in our research: 50% of households in San Diego County own fruit trees and 50% of all produce in the US goes to waste. About 50 million people in the United States are classified as food insecure. A FarmHand team member commutes from Encinitas and she always notices fruit trees with large amounts of fruit that has fallen to the ground. The FarmHand team is setting out to reduce fruit waste and donate to those in need. _ _ Rolando Park Rolando Community Council San Diego College Area Community Council El Cerrito Happy Hour Mixer & Neighborhood Page North El Cerrito Neighbors El Cerrito Community Council Mesa Colony Community Group, San Diego CA Doug Lister Eva Yakutis
