This check ball is in most boats fuel tank pick up tubes, they were designed to stop fuel from draining back into the fuel tank after the engine is shut off. They worked for older engines with mechanical fuel pumps, if they are used with an electronic fuel pumps they can get sticky and restrict fuel flow and burn up the pump. The average electric fuel pump costs about 600 to 1200 dollars , so maintenance is key to keeping your boat running. People always ask why they need to change all their valves after an Inner cooler failure this is why.
