I don’t think I’ve ever been overly strict but I’ve definitely parented from a fear of ‘what-if’. I’ve learned the hard way that I cannot protect them from the teenage experience or keep them in a bubble and the more I trust in them, the more they show how well they know the way. Our connection is sacred. They tell me everything and don’t have to lie or worse, feel shame! Sometimes they share so openly that the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up and the fear tries... to creep back in but I know better than to judge, lecture, control or punish... cause I’d much rather have a teen that can share anything with me than a teen that has to lie and ultimately live with that shame.
