Our hearts and prayers go out to all affected by the Thomas Fire. So many of our patients have come in and told their stories, many of which are devastating but several are heartwarming and make us glad to be a part of this amazing and loving community. Our family has been safe from the fire itself but we have been experiencing the effects of the ongoing smoke inhalation. It looks like we may all be having to live with this toxic air for some time. The intent of this messag...e is to forward information we have gathered as far as trying to minimize the damage to our health, the health of our children and the health of our patients, friends and family. The dry smokey air is reeking havoc on our respiratory system causing nasty symptoms. Dry eyes, sore throat, hacking cough,upset stomach and irritability are some of the symptoms seen at the clinic. With our continued exposure it's important to protect yourself from the damaging effects of the smoke. At Coastal Acupuncture we use chinese medicine to treat and prevent illness. Here are some easy to find foods and tea ideas that help support the lungs and respiratory system. In our own home we are using the information provided by Cal EPA and also using chinese medicine. If you like home remedies here are some foods that are good for the lungs: Almonds, walnuts, basil, carrots, pumpkins, winter melon, sunflower seeds, squash, figs,white radish(daikon), pears, ginger, water chestnut, yams, sweet potatoes, papaya and seaweed. Tea ideas: -make a tea out of sliced daikon radish(white radish), sliced ginger and honey. This is helpful to soothe irritated throat and for cough -plain unsweetened almond milk with honey -fresh sliced ginger, lemon and honey tea -blend figs with plain unsweetened almond milk and honey -mint tea with honey We also have herbal formulas available to treat many of these symptoms and help protect the respiratory system.
