Dementia Today is also National Get Smart About Credit Day. Why is this under the Dementia topic instead of the Celebration or Awareness topics? Because much like making the decision to take away the car keys from someone with dementia, you need to also consider taking away credit cards or making them joint cards with limited funds available. A person who incurs a debt is considered legally responsible for the debt unless you can prove that she was not competent w...hen she signed up for whatever it was that cost so much. A diagnosis can be a warning that everyone needs to step up and take protective measures to prevent your loved one from doing foolish things with money, especially if finances are limited. Loss of the ability to understand money, do math or realize the consequences of placing orders or giving money to others can occur in the earliest stages of dementia. The elder may be able to live independently and seem pretty well, but dementia is a tragic and sneaky thief that steals ability invisibly. A person with dementia absolutely needs to plan ahead and appoint an agent on a durable power of attorney (DPOA) for finances to prevent the kind of nightmare debt. * I have dementia. I alsodo NOT have a credit card. On my good days, that really sucks. My eldest sister is my durable power of attorney and keeps a handle on my finances. I manage thanks to her help. I don’t have a driver’s license either. I manage. Having dementia sucks. But having dementia and a destroyed credit would suck even worse. PLEASE make this a priority upon diagnosis. Put a plan in placejust in case. https://www.truelinkfinancial.com//dementia-credit-cards-/ See more
