Here’s a common discipline mistake made by even the best-intentioned, most well-informed parents: talking too much. And especially talking too much when kids ar...e not able to really hear you. When kids are reactive and having a hard time listening, we often need to just be quiet. Try to be comfortable just being present and slowing things down, waiting for your child to be ready to engage. When we talk and talk at our upset children, it’s usually counterproductive. We’re often giving them a lot of auditory sensory input that can further dysregulate them. Instead, try nonverbal communication. Hold them. Rub their back. Offer empathetic facial expressions. Nod. Then, when they begin to calm down and are ready to listen, you can redirect by bringing in the words and addressing the issue on a more verbal, logical level.
