California Lutheran University's Political Science Department 06.12.2020

To our Political Science family, The 2020 election season is unprecedented due to the nationwide use of mail-in voting, the global pandemic, and a heightened intensity (and anxiety) about the electoral process and outcomes of the presidential and other races. Due to these unique and challenging conditions, there will be a delay in the results of the election that might span anywhere from a few days to several weeks or months. The Political Science Department encourages studen...ts to remain engaged and safe as we await the electoral outcomes because we recognize that these circumstances may create or exacerbate the toll placed on your physical and mental health. The Department is unified in encouraging our students to be civically engaged through meaningful actions and respectful discourse about salient issues on campus and beyond. We also understand and value that there are diverse beliefs, values, and opinions about politics and policy. The mission of the Department of Political Science at California Lutheran University is to foster students’ intellectual and critical powers, and develop their capacities to apply the study of politics to the conditions of political life. To promote this mission, our classes and programs promote an understanding and appreciation of civic engagement/global citizenship, diversity, and experiential learning. Our goal is to create a learning environment, virtually and in-person, that fosters pluralism and robust dialogue so that students can cultivate academic and life skills which can also be explored within and outside of the classroom. We support our students as much as it is within our capacities as your professors and mentors, and encourage all of you to utilize University resources when your needs are beyond our abilities and expertise by contacting the CARE Team ([email protected]). As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to your Political Science faculty and/or me, as Chair, if you have concerns or questions. Warmest regards, Dr. Haco Hoang Professor and Chair of Political Science
