Happy Halloween from the School for Professional and Continuing Studies! Due to COVID-19, we are unfortunately unable to host our annual Halloween event, Spooktacular, in person this year. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate! We would like to invite our SPCS family to join in on a virtual Spooktacular event. To join, please post your Halloween costumes, pumpkin patch fun, trick or treating, and decorations with the hashtag #SPSCSpooktacular2020. At the end of the week, we’ll round up all of your submissions, and share them on our social media pages in one big post. We look forward to seeing all of your Spooktacular fun!
Registration for our FABulous Speaker Series is now open! Register for one, or all ten! Go to: https://www.callutheran.edu//lifelong-le/fifty-better.html
Marva Collins is known for starting her own private school in Chicago, Westside Preparatory School. She used her unconventional teaching methods to turn children considered unteachable into scholars. Growing up in Atmore, Alabama, Marva had access to few resources in the segregated school system. The school she attended, however, did serve as an inspiration and foundation for her educational methods she later developed. After earning a degree in secretarial science from Clark... College, Collins spent two years teaching bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, and business law because she could be a secretary herself as an African American. In 1961, she became a second-grade teacher in the Chicago Public Schools. Frustrated with the learning approach of the public school system - more playtime, less learning, according to her son - Collins used her teacher pension to start Westside Preparatory School in the downstairs of her home. She started with four students, two of which were her own children. By the end of the first year, the school had grown to 20 pupils and students had scored at least five grades higher on their standardized tests. Her methods revolved around positive reinforcement, high expectations, and high motivation. She also explored the relationship between the subject and her students’ cultural experiences. Westside Preparatory School continued to grow and Marva Collins’ learning-approach gained prominence after being featured on the news show 60 Minutes, as well as Good Morning America, Times, and Newsweek. A television movie about her was produced called The Marva Collins Story. She opened another school, trained thousands of teachers, and received over forty honorary degrees. Collins forged a new path from the public school system with her own unique teaching style, giving inner-city students a chance to succeed, learn to love literature, and gain accomplishments. https://www.chicagotribune.com//ct-marva-collins-obituary-

Under the leadership of James Forman, Bob Moses,Marion Barry, and John Lewis the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee directed much of the black voter registration drives in the South. In order to combat literacy tests and other means of voter oppression SNCC created Freedom Schools. The Freedom Schools of the 1960s were first developed by SNCC during the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi. Nearly 40 freedom schools were established serving close to 2,500 students, inc...luding parents and grandparents. An exploration of Freedom Schools allowed students and teachers today, to explore the purpose and possibilities of public education. These schools were a profound building block to the creation of modern elementary schools in America. Without the brave families and communities involved many of us would not be where we are today. Freedom Schools are often the unsung heroes of the 1960’s Civil Rights movement, the freedom to a proper education helped break some of the barriers that people of color face on a daily basis. Toni Morrison is one of the most celebrated authors in the world. Several of her published books have won her prestigious awards such as, the Pulitzer Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former President Barack Obama. Before becoming an author, Morrison was a professor at numerous universities where she met many artists, writers, and activists who influenced her work. After being a professor, Morrison became an editor for the textbook division at Random House pu...blishing where she then transferred to their New York City branch to edit fiction and books by African-American authors. Morrison did not publish her first novel The Bluest Eye until she was 39 years old, then three years later published her second book Sula, which won her the National Book Award. Morrison’s success motivated her to leave editing and pursue becoming an author full-time. By 1978, Morrison published Beloved, a true story about an African-American enslaved woman, which lasted bestseller for 23 weeks straight. Her work continued to inspire others through her focus on African American life and her commentary on race relations. In 1998, Oprah Winfrey co-produced and starred in the film adaptation of Morrison’s book, Beloved. Morrison was named a Living Legend in the year 2000 by the Library of Congress. In 2010, Morrison published the last children’s book she collaborated with her son on, before his passing at the age of 45 and also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom that same month.
