Protect your home against rats and save thousands of dollars in damage. Here are three tips to make sure they never take up residence in your attic. If rats can find a warm, dry place to raise their family, they will move right in; your home's attic is a perfect environment for rats to live in. Most homes have their HVAC system in the attic. When the A/C runs, the condensation that is formed can drip into a pan under the HVAC. This condensation turns into a supply of wate...r to sustain a rat infestation. The number one reason Clear Efficiency has to remove and replace the attic insulation is that the rats contaminated the insulation with feces and urine beyond repair. If the rats haven't damaged it, we will work with your existing insulation instead of removing it. This will save you thousands of dollars! Here's what to look for and how to keep the critters out. 1. Tree branches or shrubs within 3 feet or your roof 2. Loose or missing vent screens around the crawlspace and attic 3. Any hole larger than the size of a quarter a rat can slip through The photos above give some examples of branches and trees that can be used as highways to get on top of your roof; it doesn't take much for them to get in. Also, notice on the crawlspace vents that they are not fastened on the bottom; this is an easy access point. If they can get into the crawlspace, they will quickly get into the attic. We recommend trimming the trees back from your roof to give at least 3 feet of space so they can't jump onto the roof. Also, It is good practice to inspect the home at least twice a year so any possible infiltration entrances can be buttoned up. If you find an entrance point, it will likely have a dark brown grease stain from the rats' filthy bellies that drag over the same spot again and again. If you find one of these entrances, the most effective method of plugging the hole is with steel wool and then filling it with some expanding foam from a can. Rats can chew through many materials, and for the best results, our clients tell us using steel wool will help keep them from coming back. How much does having solar add to the value of your home? If you are renting your solar through a lease or PPA then probably not much since you don't own the equipment.
