The Department of Classics at UC Berkeley would officially like to thank all of the furry (and some not-so-furry) friends that are keeping us sane and academically productive during this period of isolation. Though the members of our dynamic department are spread around the country (and beyond) at this time, we are united in our work and in our gratitude to these adorable non-official members of the department <3 We dare you to find a cuter album out there on the web!

In case you missed it over the summer, check out "An Archaeology of Catastrophe: Troy and the Collapse of the Bronze Age" - a discussion between our own Dr. James Porter and poet Gillian Conoley. They bring to life Homer's epic poems, the Iliad and the Odyssey, and the fact that they commemorate a war that led to the capture and obliteration of an ancient city called Troy. They show how disaster and catastrophe have found narrative expression from Ancient Greece to the present day. The lecture was sponsored by The Commonwealth Club of California and the Townsend Center for the Humanities.
