Classic Muscle 29.01.2021

We are honored to introduce a few new members to the Classic Muscle family of full restorations! Please give a warm welcome to Mike and his 1968 Pontiac Firebird! Quite the story; in short, this was Mike’s first car and he has owned it for over 40 years. We will be restoring the car to a Day 2 status; mostly original with a few modern amenities, very similar to Cindy’s ‘67 Mustang. We will begin a complete tear-down soon, then it is off to blasting and the fun continues...! The car is currently a survivor and it does run and drive, but we will be upgrading and renewing the drivetrain as needed. As you can see, due to typical vinyl top corrosion, it will be getting a new roof skin. Front power disc brakes, AC and an upgraded transmission are also on the forecast. We look forward to the future and we feel that Mike and his Firebird are going to be a great addition to the family. Mike is a genuine, great guy and once again please give him a warm welcome and make him feel at home if you’re so inclined. Thank you all in advance for keeping this a family-friendly page and thank you also for following our builds! See more

After a closer look, we discovered things were a little worse off than we thought inside Roxy’s engine. At least one rod bearing and crank journal were excessively worn and had it gone undetected much longer, the bearings likely would’ve spun. Actual cause is unknown but it seems as though the oil holes in the crankshaft journals were not properly chamfered/relieved by the engine machinist. This leaves burrs/sharp edges and would also lead to an improper/narrow oiling pattern. This was a home-built engine, so all bets are off. Glad we were able to find this before something catastrophic happened!

Well, not the best news but things could be worse. Although running great with no obvious signs of internal issues, we discovered Roxy’s engine was in the early stages of camshaft failure and all the metal debris worked its way into the oiling system, damaging the bearings. Our guess is the previous owner/builder may not have worn the cam in properly? Nonetheless, flat-tappet cams are prone to failure as to why we don’t use them. Still talking options for the next steps but if we have this engine rebuilt, (Doesn’t actually seem too far gone at first glance) it will receive a roller camshaft, as all of our builds do.
