I woke up early to check on our wonderful friends and neighbors in our Downtown Oakland community. What started as a peaceful demonstration quickly turned violent and destructive when police began to tear gas the crowd. Many people have messaged me to express how sorry they are that our windows were vandalized. Please don’t spend time worrying about us and please start working to demand justice. We can easily have the graffiti removed and we can replace windows in our downtow...n community. We cannot replace the black lives that have been lost. Please remember that it is a risk to be black in this country every single day and nothing can compare to what a black person has been through. Please start showing up for racial justice by doing the following: 1. Educate Yourself: Reading, watching documentaries and joining an anti-racist educational program are all good ways to learn the facts of how racism permeates American life. 2. Call Lawmakers and Vote: If you’re unsatisfied with how your local officials are handling issues of racial justice call their offices, and remember to register to vote. 3. Speak Up: If you are white or a non-black person of color, chances are you’ve seen and heard examples of anti-black racism from friends, family or colleagues.
