CCL founder Marshall Saunders died in late 2019, but his legacy lives on in the grassroots advocacy organization he established. Now 200,000 supporters strong nationwide, CCL is poised to influence bipartisan climate legislation under the incoming Biden administration and a potentially divided 117th Congress. In honor of Saunders’ inspiring legacy, Joan and Irwin Jacobs have established the Marshall Saunders Chancellor’s Endowed Chair in Global Climate Policy and Research at ...the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS). Over the years, we have been so impressed with what Marshall was able to accomplish with the Citizens’ Climate Lobbyhe built an amazing organization that is well on its way to influencing many members of congress, said Irwin Jacobs, who is a past member of the CCL Advisory Board. When Marshall passed on, we thought it was important to remember his accomplishments, and a chair at GPS seemed to be a very good way of doing so. The inaugural chairholder of the Marshall Saunders Chancellor’s Endowed Chair in Global Climate Policy and Research is GPS associate professor Jennifer Burney. An environmental scientist, Burney’s research focuses on simultaneously achieving global food security and mitigating climate change. Burney studies poverty alleviation and agricultural adaptation, the relationships between energy and food security, the environmental effects of food production and consumption, and climate and air pollution impacts on agriculture. Burney gave a presentation on her work at a special virtual event on Nov. 6, attended by UC San Diego leadership, the Jacobses, as well as Saunders’ family members and colleagues. At that event, CCL Executive Director Mark Reynolds said, Marshall would be so honored and humbled by this. I know our organization iswe’re really thrilled to be part of this.

This is the last weekend to get out the #climate vote! Hundreds of CCL volunteers have been working with the Environmental Voter Project (EVP) to encourage other people who care about the climate to cast their ballots. CCL volunteers have been such valuable assets on our team so far this year, says Shannon Seigal, EVP’s Organizing Director. There is still time left in this home stretch for you to join EVP’s activities and help turn out even more climate voters. The Environ...mental Voter Project is hoping to fill over 9,000 phone banking volunteer shifts from Friday, Oct. 30 through Tuesday, Nov. 3. We plan to call all of our voters as many times as we can to get as many people as possible out to the polls, Shannon explains. We’ll also have information on a recommended voter protection hotline in case we reach any voters facing issues voting. Whether you’re already trained with EVP or you’re a brand new volunteer, you will need to sign up for and commit to certain volunteer shifts.
