Southampton "is a bit more old money, Upper East Side conservative the Americans might call it Waspy. Calvin Klein has a place there. After Southampton the traffic becomes single lane and it takes an age to get to East Hampton, although the super-rich take helicopters. Next you will pass Water Mill, a hamlet where Jennifer Lopez has a $10 million home, before you come to S...agaponack. That has a reputation as a hedge funders’ domain. It is more new money and celebrities, there are lots of McMansions and glass boxes on the ocean, and price tags are between $40 million and $100 million. At the restaurants there are car jockeys for the white Range Rovers driving up. It is a see-and-be-seen kind of place. Just past East Hampton is the village of Amagansett. Paul McCartney has a house there. It is just charming, like the all-American dream you see in the movies: white-picket fences, Georgian houses, an old church. You can rent bicycles there. The beach is much quieter here than in East Hampton. You are away from everything. Montauk, the easternmost point in the Hamptons, is the end of the line. Ralph Lauren has had a home there for years, Julianne Moore has a home there. It is more hippy-chic, boho, rustic more surfers. Montauk is also a party place. So what kind of hamptonite are you?
