It is deep sadness we learned of the passing of Ray Dishong on Wednesday. Ray was a faithful member of Christ UMC and longtime usher who greeted everyone with a smile. Following the COVID pandemic, the family plans to have his cremains returned to his native Pennsylvania. Please remember the Dishong family in your prayers.

WHAT IF WE RETHINK CHURCH? What if church was less about Sunday, and more about the other days of the week? What if church wasn’t just a place we go, ... But something we do. A menu of adventure. An active verb. Instead of a noun. What if Church wasn’t just a building, but thousands of doors, each opening to a different concept or experience of church? So that whoever knocks might find a journey to call their own. What if church was the way church was in the beginning? Outbound. Unbound. Active. Human beings from completely different worlds, united by common purpose, experience and belief. Creating real solutions for their daily lives. What if church looked at itself with seekers’ eyes? Recognizing that even the smallest step through one of our doors is an act of courage, a moment of vulnerability. That solving a secular need can lead to spiritual interaction. That social relationships can offer opportunities for discussions of faith, and provide inspiration for discovery. And that for a skeptical world, actions often do speak louder than words. What if church was more of an out-of-church experience? An opportunity to prove what we say we believe, with our lives. Then, perhaps, Sunday could be a day of rest and reflection on all that we had accomplished Monday through Saturday. What if we rethink church? Not in terms of what it is, but what it could be. And what if we can convince the world to do the same? Together we can open hearts, open minds, and open doors. The people of The United Methodist Church

This video, made in 2018, tells the story of how Christ Ministry Center came to life in the middle of the immigration/border crisis in San Diego. Only a bit dated (now nearing 10,000 immigrants welcomed), it is the comprehensive story of CMC and what later became Safe Harbors Network.

It felt a bit awkward to put on the clergy collar yesterday for the first time in months, but what an honor to do so while accepting the International Rescue Co...mmittee San Diego's "Humanitarian Organization of the Year Award." Check our Safe Harbors Network Facebook page. Safe Harbors Network is the recipient of the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) San Diego Humanitarian Organization of the Year Award for 2020. IRC San Diego Executive Director Donna Duvin presented the award to Safe Harbors Executive Director Bill Jenkins in a virtual Awards Banquet Monday. On behalf of Safe Harbors’ staff, volunteers, and supporters, I am honored to accept this award, Jenkins said. IRC and Safe Harbors forged a partnership last year whereby Safe Harbors seeks to provide shelter and basic essentials for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers, while IRC provides case work to help our residents efficiently move to self-sufficiency. We partner in meeting the needs of the marginalized at their most vulnerable circumstances, providing beds, food, spiritual, health and legal support, and assimilation skills. he added. The International Rescue Committee is a global humanitarian aid, relief, and development organization. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC provides emergency aid and long-term assistance to refugees and those displaced by war, persecution, or natural disaster. The IRC is currently working in about 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities where it resettles refugees and helps them become self-sufficient. It focuses mainly on health, education, economic well-being, power, and safety. Consisting of first responders, humanitarian relief workers, international development experts, health care providers, and educators, the IRC has assisted millions of people around the world since its founding.

A Dutch photographer used artificial intelligence to construct a portrait of Jesus based on what we know about his ethnicity and culture. This is what he looks ...like. As we’ve said, we worship a Middle Eastern man of color named Jesus who spoke zero English, died on the cross for our sin and resurrected from the dead, and was once an Immigrant child fleeing persecution. He’s not American. He doesn’t have blue or green eyes. He’s not a Republican or Democrat. He’s not a donkey or elephant. He’s the lion and the lamb.
