Happy Sabbath! Lesson 9 : "To Serve and to Save" Today's #MemoryVerse:... "Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles." Isaiah 42:1 (KJV) Many feel that it would be a great privilege to visit the scenes of Christ’s life on earth, to walk where He trod, to look upon the lake beside which He loved to teach, and the hills and valleys on which His eyes so often rested. But we need not go to Nazareth, to Capernaum, or to Bethany, in order to walk in the steps of Jesus. We shall find His footprints beside the sickbed, in the hovels of poverty, in the crowded alleys of the great city, and in every place where there are human hearts in need of consolation. In doing as Jesus did when on earth, we shall walk in His steps. The Desire of Ages, p. 640. Isaiah spoke of a servant of the Lord with a similar mission of mercy: A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. Isaiah 42:3, 7 (KJV) The Sabbath school lesson this week reviews Isaiah 41, 42:1-7, 44:26 - 45:6, and 49:1-12. Deliverance requires a Deliverer. God’s servant nation would be delivered by two deliverers: Cyrus, who would set the captives free from Babylonian exile, and an unnamed Servant, whose identity as the Messiah is progressively revealed. Happy Sabbath! Lesson 8 : "Comfort My People" Today's #MemoryVerse:... "O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!" Isaiah 40:9 (KJV) World War II ended in 1945 while a Japanese soldier named Shoichi Yokoi was hiding out in the jungle on the island of Guam. Leaflets dropped from U.S. planes proclaimed peace, but Yokoi thought it a trick. A loyal, patriotic soldier of the emperor, he had vowed never to surrender. Because he had no contact with civilization, he lived on what he could find in the jungle, a sparse, hard existence indeed. In 1972, 27 years after the end of World War II, hunters came across Yokoi while he was fishing, and he only then learned that the message of peace had been true. While the rest of his people had been enjoying peace for decades, Yokoi had been enduring decades of privation and stress. The Sabbath school lesson this week reviews Isaiah 40. Many centuries before WWII, through Isaiah, God announced that the time of His people's stress and suffering was really over. Their time of trouble had ended, and God was returning to them. Happy Sabbath, dear children of God. Today's #MemoryVerse: "In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple." Isaiah 6:1 (KJV)... The Sabbath school lesson this week (Isaiah 6) takes a look at Judah's crisis of leadership and the sad results that followed. The death of king Uzziah in about 740 B.C. marks a major crisis in the leadership of God's people. The king dies during great political turmoil (the Assyrians are on the warpath), making the country vulnerable during a transition of power. At a time of insecurity, when the weakness of human leadership was painfully obvious, Isaiah was given a vision of the blazing glory of God upon His throne. God encouraged Isaiah by showing the prophet that He was still in control, despite outward events.
