Unusual Traffic Hazard for the CHP Monterey Area along Elkhorn Slough * The California Highway Patrol responds to many hazards in the roadway to protect the motoring public along our California roadways. On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at 12:55 pm a witness called in an unusual traffic hazard in the roadway. The California Highway Patrol Monterey area responded to a sea lion laying down on the road. When CHP Officer Jose Chavez arrived the California Sea Li...on was on the right shoulder. The Marine Mammal Center was requested to assist with the safe removal of the California Sea Lion. The witness was working in the area as part of a tree cutting crew with Davey Tree Care Services. Officer Jose Chavez and Davey Tree Care Services began one-way traffic control along Elkhorn Road. The Marine Mammal Center arrived and immediately began to safely take possession of the California Sea Lion and safely transferred her into a crate. The Marine Mammal Center confirmed the California Sea Lion was a 100-pound female adult and the distance it swam was very unusual. The California Sea Lion will be transported by the Marine Mammal Center to a veterinarian in Sausalito. All in all, she was in good spirits. The California Highway Patrol would like to thank the crew with Davey’s Tree Service, and The Mammal Marine Center for assisting the California Sea Lion to safety. The Mammal Marine Center also gave the California Highway Patrol Monterey area the honor of naming the California Sea Lion. She will now be known as the 730 Protector. See more

To help support the California Highway Patrol’s yearlong effort to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety, the Department was awarded the California Pedestrian and Bicyclist Enforcement and Education Project VIII grant. The California Highway Patrol will use the grant funds to conduct enhanced-enforcement patrols and public awareness campaigns through September 30, 2021. Pedestrian and bicycle fatalities accounted for nearly 33 percent of all traffic-related deaths in Califo...rnia in 2018. The California Highway Patrol reminds motorists to always scan each intersection for potential foot and bicycle traffic and to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians whether in marked or unmarked crosswalks. Today, October 7 is the National Walk and Bike to School Day. The California Highway Patrol will also use the grant funding to educate the public on safe and courteous traffic behavior through virtual public presentations and safety publications, and to provide bicycle and pedestrian safety equipment for distribution including bicycle helmets and reflective gear. Funding for this program was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. See more
