*** STREET RACING UPDATE *** On February 19th, the MODESTO POLICE DEPARTMENT, the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office and the CHP - Modesto partnered to combat illegal street racing and smog violations here in the county. The two-hour operation yielded 73 citations and 2 arrests. Many of the violators will be paying the Smog Referee a visit in the near future. We understand the community’s frustration regarding this illegal and dangerous activity. Rest assure we are doing our absolute best. No single agency can do it alone. SIX IMATES ESCAPED FROM MERCED COUNTY DOWNTOWN JAIL On January 10, 2021, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office Jail Staff determined that just before midnight, six... inmates housed at the Merced County Downtown Jail were missing from their cell. A preliminary investigation has determined that the inmates were able to gain access to the roof of the facility and utilize a homemade rope to scale down the side of the jail. The Merced County Sheriff’s Office has formed a task force to track down and apprehend these fugitives. Anyone with information or anyone who sees any of these individuals is asked not to approach them and to immediately call 9-1-1. The Merced County Sheriff's Office will update with additional information as it becomes available. IT STARTED WITH A SEED: In October, the Bogetti Family set up a pumpkin patch at the corner of SR-132 and Hart Road. With the money raised, the Bogetti’s reached out to the CHP - Modesto to do something special for a family during the holiday season. We were led to Marabella Oseguera and her three amazing children. The children received some gifts from our toy drive and Marabella gained a special tool to continue her studies at MJC, an HP laptop. We are eternally thankful for the Bogetti’s and their passion to make a difference here is Stanislaus County...keep up the outstanding work!

YOU MADE IT HAPPEN: Yesterday, hundreds of kids in Stanislaus County woke up to find Christmas gifts that would typically not be there. The CHP - Modesto would like to thank everyone who donated to our CHiPs for Kids Toy Drive. Whether it was a private or corporate donation, each individual toy brought joy to someone in need...and in turn, warmed our hearts. Thank you!!!

EPIC SLIDE: The driver of this G-T-Oh was traveling too fast on Mitchell Road. They lost control, totally ollied up onto the median barrier, and nailed the most epic of slides . Luckily, nobody was injured.

SPEED KILLS: This afternoon, between a two-hour period, the CHP - Modesto issues 23 citations and impounded 2 vehicles. We encourage everyone to please lower your speed. Speed continues to be a major factor in fatality collisions. #drivetostayalive

VERY CONCERNING: After responding to a fog-related collision this morning, it is very concerning the number of vehicles without their headlights on. The California Highway Patrol recommends all drivers manually turn on their headlights during foggy conditions to be the most visible. Daytime running lights are usually not sufficient and the auto feature, in regards to headlights, can be unreliable. Remember, leave yourself plenty of time in the morning to get to your destination...and slow it down. Be safe everyone.

Our Department is saddened to announce the death of 48-year-old Sergeant Harry Cohen, most recently assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau K-9 Unit. Serge...ant Cohen passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020, after suffering a heart attack while on-duty. He began his service with our Department on September 30, 1996. As a deputy, he worked assignments at the Banning Station, Lake Elsinore Station, and Southwest Station. In 2003, he promoted to corporal within the Southwest Station where he worked until his promotion to sergeant in 2010. Sergeant Cohen then worked assignments at the Perris Station, Moreno Valley Station, Ben Clark Training Center, PSEC, Special Enforcement Bureau, and K-9 Unit. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter. A husband, father, best friend and deputy: he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, ahead of any type of injury, disease, or violence. The CHP is partnering with the National Highwa...y Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to encourage parents and guardians to discuss driver safety with their young drivers. Discussions about safe driving include avoiding distractions such as cell phones, using seat belts, obeying speed limits, not driving impaired, and limiting the number of passengers. The CHP provides free education to help keep teen drivers alive in its Start Smart course, offered by all CHP offices. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, classes are being held online. MOOOOVE IT ALONG...NOTHING TO SEE HERE: At 8:45 am, the CHP - Modesto responded to a non-injury traffic collsion involving an overturned cattle trailer, SB SR-99, just north of Hatch Road. Fortunately, these cows appeared to be uninjured. What's the saying, "Happy cows are from California?" Great work from our team... Modesto Fire Department, Ceres Fire Department, and Caltrans, District 10 for their assistance extricating the 3 cows to a safer location.

NEAR MISS: The driver of this vehicle and property owner are very lucky nobody was hurt in this rollover crash on SR-132 at Texas Road. Great work from American Medical Response - Stanislaus CES and The Woodland FD.

THE VOTE IS IN: Interstate I-5 is not the beat to be working today. The SB Westley Road offramp will be temporarily closed to recover this combination. The driver was lucky to have sustained only minor injuries. Remember, drowsy driving is extremely dangerous.

AND YOU THOUGHT YOUR DAY WAS CRABBY: Expect delays SB I-5 in the Westley Area. We have 2 separate crashes involving a total of 3 semis. Caltrans, District 10 is on scene assisting with traffic control through the area. And yes, the drivers will all be okay.
