Literacy + AAC = . I love finding ways to incorporate literacy in to my sessions, and that includes my sessions using AAC! Admittedly this is something I’ve had to improve on the last few years, but now I feel much more confident making sure ALL of my students are exposed to books! Here are some tips for modeling AAC with literacy! Have a laminated manual board with you and use a dry-erase marker to circle words you want to model Use sticky notes in your book to remin...d you to model Involve parents! When you can, it’s always helpful to let parents know what you’re going to be working on, what words you are going to be modeling, and where to find them on the device. This has been super helpful for me during online sessions! I love getting parents involved while we read! Model without expectations and make it fun! This has been the biggest thing for me to learn with AAC and literacy. I want reading to be a fun task and I don’t want it to feel like drill work. I use the same silly voices and interact with the book the same way as I would during any session. . It’s all about monsters in speech this week! my early language learners are reading this monster book from early language book club! It follows a repetitive pattern and works on combining color and noun I am also using it on teletherapy by just pulling up the PDF and sharing my screen and using the cut out monsters and eyeball rings as props! . It’s DRESS-UP DOGS time! it might seem silly (and it is..) but this is one of my FAVORITE activities in speech! I do this every year around Halloween and the kids love it! We read the book and with each dog, we pull the matching card and follow the gross motor direction on the card! I love that it gets kids up and moving while we do speech! Material/cleaning hack!! . Do you use paper materials with your kids in person? I do, and I’ve been dreading wiping down every single card, setting them out to dry, or letting them become sticky with sanitizer spray. I decided to try these acrylic photo frames for my cards and they have made things so much easier! I bought 4x6 frames so I can fit two small cards or one large card in each frame. My kids can touch them, pick them up, or even write on them with dry-erase... markers! All I have to do is wipe the frames down at the end and the cards are ready for my next session! . I have plenty of page protectors, but I wanted something that stood up and allowed the kids to smaller amounts of cards at a time, rather than all of them on one sheet. This has been working great!!
