One person was arrested for DUI while conducting a DUI checkpoint on December 18th. The checkpoint was held at Pipeline Avenue and Spectrum South from 6:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Nine drivers were cited for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license, four vehicles were towed, and two others were arrested for possession of methamphetamine and outstanding warrants. Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose o...f checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. As the state continues to work to stop the spread of COVID-19, the Chino Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe when they are traveling. Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA
In keeping with tradition, we are excited to announce the 20th Annual Run for Russ 5k Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, February 6th, 2021. The run/community walk will look a little bit different this year due to the current pandemic but we are excited to offer a virtual option. Participants can register for the run/walk in person or virtually. Masks will be required while going to and from the course but will not be required while running/walking. The race start window will... be between 8:00-8:30 am. to keep large crowds from gathering for the start of the race. The top male and female will receive their award the week following the race. Every year on the first Saturday in February, the Chino Police Officers' Foundation is able to raise funds through this 5K run & community walk. This effort could not happen without the generosity of our great community members. The funds raised from this event go back into the community by helping our youth, individuals, and organizations within the city of Chino that are in need of financial assistance. Registration for the run is now open and you can register at www.Runforruss2021.racewire.com.

Due to the high winds, we are receiving numerous calls throughout the city regarding wires down. We would like to remind everyone to not touch any wires that may be down and to continue to report them to our dispatch at 909-628-1234. Please note, there may be some delays due to high call volume. As a reminder, an intersection with an inoperative, blacked-out traffic signal should be treated as if it had stop signs in all directions. If you are experiencing a power outage in your area, please visit https://www.sce.com/outage-center/check-outage-status for a status update.

This week (Oct. 18-24) is National Teen Driver Safety Week, and the Chino Police Department is encouraging parents to discuss the importance of safe driving habits with their teens as newly licensed drivers. This week, and every week, we want parents to get involved with their teen’s new responsibilities as a driver and help them understand the rules of the road. New drivers will naturally be inexperienced, Chino Police Department Sergeant Ted Olden said. Parents play an i...mportant role in helping teens stay safe behind the wheel. It starts with practicing good habits like wearing a seat belt, staying off the phone, and following the speed limit. The greatest risk for teen drivers is distracted driving, speeding, and impairment. Throughout the week the Chino Police Department offers tips to parents and caregivers on how to talk to teens about the consequences of making dangerous and illegal choices behind the wheel. Avoid Distractions: Cell phone use while driving is illegal. Drivers under 18 are not allowed to use a phone or other electronic device for any reason, including hands-free. Understand Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) Laws: For the first 12 months you have a license or until the age of 18, no passengers under 20 years old are allowed unless a licensed parent, guardian or other adult 25 years old or older is in the car with you. Late-night driving (between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.) is also not permitted. Never Drive Under the Influence: All teens are too young to legally buy, possess or consume alcohol. Under California’s zero-tolerance law, any driver under 21 cannot drink any alcohol and drive (blood alcohol concentration of .01% or higher). Follow the Speed Limit: The road is not a racetrack. Speeding is a risky behavior that increases the chances of serious injury or death in a crash. It’s important for parents to let their teen know that driving is not a right, but a privilege. It can be taken away when they don’t follow the rules. For more safe driving tips to share with your teens, visit www.gosafelyca.org. To learn more about state laws for different traffic safety issues, visit the Governors Highway Safety Association website at https://www.ghsa.org/state-laws/states/california. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA.
*Update 9:54 PM* We received several calls regarding shots fired in the area of 12th and Riverside. Officers responded to the area and confirmed no one had been struck by gunfire. All of the suspects have been taken into custody and four firearms were recovered. Please avoid the area of Riverside Drive between Cypress and San Antonio due to an active police investigation. Updates to follow.
Chino Police Department Awarded $150,000 Grant From the OTS: The safety of everyone traveling is the focus of a grant awarded to the Chino Police Department. The $150,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) will assist in the Chino Police Department’s efforts to reduce deaths and injuries on Chino roads. These are trying times, and now more than ever, it is important that we are at the forefront of traffic safety, Chino Police Department, Sergeant Ted ...Olden said. This funding allows us to educate and enhance the safety of all residents. The one-year grant is for the 2021 federal fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1, 2020 to Sept. 30, 2021. The grant will fund a variety of traffic safety programs, including: Patrols with emphasis on alcohol and drug-impaired driving prevention. Patrols with emphasis on awareness and education of California’s hands-free cell phone law. Patrols with emphasis on education of traffic rights for bicyclists and pedestrians. Patrols with emphasis on awareness and education of primary causes of crashes: excess speed, failure to yield, failure to stop at stop signs/signals, improper turning/lane changes. Patrols with emphasis on child car seat and seatbelt use. Community education presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, DUI, speed, bicycle and pedestrian safety. Collaborative efforts with neighboring agencies on traffic safety priorities. Officer training and/or recertification: Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). Through education and behavior changes, we hope to create an environment that is safe and equitable for all road users in our community, Sergeant Olden said. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA
