Chinese Medicine Works: January 2018 Newsletter -
In these demanding times of one crisis after another, and the repair that we must initiate in our political, ecological and social bodies, reclaiming our personal creative resilience is something we can all use right now. Our friend Glenn Hartelius, PhD has developed a unique 'Body Map of Attention,' the culmination of more than 20 years of research, university teaching, and client practice. He's sharing 3 core practices that provide anyone willing to learn how to achieve hi...gh-performance and high-resilience states of mind. He's presenting a free LIVE online training to help you do just that--learn 3 Essential Practices: #1: How to switch your attention from your stories to your sensations, which opens you to greater capacity for creativity, clarity, intuition and resilience. #2: How to quiet your mind to find where your attention LIVES in your body, providing access to new ways of being you. #3: How to move your attention to change your way of being that gives you a powerful tool for transforming your everyday experience and activating your hidden resources and capacities. Who doesn't need to bolster their capacities these days? sane and compassionate guidelines for all....
Here's a short summary of key information with the citations that make them 'facts.'
Explicit social strategies can help us navigate the practical and reflective challenges of this pandemic.

Not that this is particularly shocking news, but mental and emotional pain and suffering are often present at a deeper layer than physical pain, discomfort and impairment. We recognize this as a recognized reality in Chinese medicine thought and practice. It behooves us not only to offer alternatives to opioids, but to use our medicine to address the individual existential crises that are at hand and will probably become much worse and more prevalent. https://www.sfchronicle.com//How-depression-anxiety-and-lo
This is a good summary of the possible impact of the recent decision by Medicare to cover the cost up to 20 treatments annually for acupuncture. It's also good to to read the comments, which are first indications of the coming reactionary backlash from conventional American medicine. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/924534
This is of course interesting and illuminating research. It also provides a conceptual bridge between Chinese medicine ideas and Western paradigms that allows us to explain to patients and the public the various mechanisms by which acupuncture works. https://www.theguardian.com//pains-and-needles-brain-scans
Another confirmation of the empirical clinical evidence for acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy for patients diagnosed with cancer. https://www.acupuncturetoday.com/digital/index.php
Food for thought? The sapiens genome and microbiome evolved over the last 70-150,000 years on the diet of hunter-gatherers. We have reduced our consumption to a dramatically diminished diversity of plant and animal sourced foods since we invented agriculture, which technology has enabled us to rule the planet at the expense of the global ecosystem. The choice of whether to adopt any particular modern diet for the sake of health, performance or ethical ideology is the privilege of a primarily white, affluent, Western minority. Nature loves diversity and abhors homogeneity, in any and all contexts. https://www.theguardian.com//is-veganism-as-good-for-you-a
