THE CHINESE EXCLUSION ACT documentary on PBS - Premiering Tuesday 5/29: check local listings. A deeply American story about immigration and national identity, civil rights and human justice; about how we define who can be an American, and what being an American means. Examine the origin, history and impact of the 1882 law that made it illegal for Chinese workers to come to America and for Chinese nationals already here ever to become U.S. citizens. The national screening of "Tyrus," about Angel Island immigrant Tyrus Wong, will air September 8 on PBS (check your local listings). Here is a clip where he vis...ited the island, about five years ago. Tyrus created the painterly look of the movie "Bambi" and came through the island in 1920 when he was ten. He lived and created until he passed away last year at the age of 106! He also worked for Warner Bros., created many other forms of art including ceramics and greeting cards, and into his 100s was building and flying incredible kites. Pamela Tom's film is one to record and watch! Please share this post with your friends so they can enjoy it as well. See more

Take a moment to read about renowned civil rights pioneer, historian, architect and author, Philip Choy. Denied a promotion in his architecture firm because he ...was Chinese American, he set upon a path to bring awareness of the Chinese contributions to America. He believed the contributions of Chinese Americans to the development of the nation had been ignored in standard American history books. He said that we had been denied the right to tell our story, said Connie Young Yu, an old friend and a historian in her own right. It is an American story. He started the first Asian studies program at UC Berkeley, brought awareness and respect for the role the Chinese played in building the Transcontinental Railroad, was a distinguished speaker and author. His books include, "San Francisco Chinatown: A guide to its history and Architecture", "The Coming of Man: 19th Century American Perceptions of the Chinese", "Chinese America: History and Perspectives", "Chinese Camp Cultural Resources Inventory", and "Canton Footprints: Sacramento's Chinese Legacy".
