Stories of Resilience A pioneer in law, Jane Bolin was the first Black woman to attend Yale Law School in 1931. In 1939, she became the first Black female judge in the United States, where she served for 10 years. One of her significant contributions throughout her career was working with private employers to hire people based on their skills, as opposed to discriminating against them because of their race. She also served on the boards of the NAACP, Child Welfare League of America, and the Neighborhood Children’s Center.
Today is National Random Acts of Kindness Day! This day is intended to promote just that random acts of kindness. The smile you produce on someone else’s face can often result in a smile consuming your face as well, leading to increased levels of happiness for both of you. Your acts of kindness can make others’ days, and can promote a chain reaction leading to positive acts of kindness spreading around the world! Share your random act of kindness with us in the comments!

Our hearts go out to the family of Karen Ruiz, who's life was taken by her abusive ex-boyfriend in front of their 3-year old daughter. Moments like these serve as a heartbreaking reminder of the daily struggles domestic violence survivors face when seeking safety. Leaving any domestic violence situation is the most dangerous time for the victim-survivor as they are at a heightened risk for retaliation from their violent partner. In light of this incident, we would like to take a moment and remind our community that our DV staff are available to offer safety planning, restraining order assistance and emergency shelter to those seeking safety. Please save and share these phone numbers, so we can help save lives of those seeking safety.
Saying "thank you" doesn't seem enough to express our gratitude to all of our amazing Hope for the Holiday donors. Through your gifts we were able to raise $21,600, surpassing our original goal of $7,500 by more than double! Each dollar helps our staff continue to provide life saving services to our community into the new year! We are honored to be part of such a thoughtful and supportive community who sees the benefit of what we do each day! So, again, we say thank you for your giving!
Child & Family Center lost a treasured friend and supporter this past week with the passing of Rob McFerren. Rob and Laina have been involved with the Center since 1998 when their restaurant, Wolf Creek Restaurant & Brewing Co, participated in our annual Taste of the Town. They have been there every year since. Over the years, Rob has helped to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Center through... hosting our Annual Trike Derby at the Brewery, Community Pints Nights, hosting and catering many board and staff parties and special events, Socially Responsible Saturday "Drive Through Brewery, donating raffle gifts, and so much more. Rob was kind, generous, humble, witty and a wonderful husband and father. Our hearts are with Laina, their girls and family.

For many isolation during COVID brought on a sense of relief and safety, but for those in homes where domestic violence is present it did the opposite. Since lockdown, medical professionals have seen an increase in abuse related injuries, showing not only has abuse risen during COVID but the severity of the abuse as well. #DVAM #KnowtheFacts #EndDV
