Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has dedicated a large section of the current issue to declines in insect populations. This set of 11 articles focus on current research around insect loss from several perspectives. It is often hard to track populations of super numerous creatures like insects, but the science is growing! Insects feed our birds and pollinate our plants among their many services to people and ecosystems. CCBER helps promote insect conversation a...nd biodiversity along with all of our other amazing coastal wildlife! https://www.pnas.org/content/118/2/e2023989118 #entomology #insects #conservation #bugsforlife

The first edition of NCOS News for 2021 is out! In this month's newsletter, you can learn about opportunities for artists to integrate their artwork into nature at NCOS, take a survey on an NCOS Naturalist Program in development, and read about how we're establishing populations of native wildflowers in the Mesa grassland. There's also a compelling article by CCBER's Wayne Chapman about the unwelcome impacts of rat poison on native wildlife, and a call for observations as th...e bird breeding season begins. This Virginia Rail (Rallus limicola) and Sora (Porzana carolina) were spotted in Phelps Creek at NCOS on the same day! Virginia Rails live in marshes across much of our continent and are often found together with Sora, but their diets differ: the short-billed Sora eats many more seeds, while the long-billed Virginia Rail eats mostly insects. #ccber #ucsb #northcampusopenspace #ncos #virginiarail #sora #wetlandrestoration #saltmarsh
