Challenged Sailors San Diego 24.03.2021

The 'midwinters" were a huge success this weekend! On behalf of all the sailors I'd like to thank CorYC for hosting us and all the volunteers who made it happen. This project is huge. To understand, volunteers brought donuts, made brownies, served as companions, hauled boats in and out of the water, hauled sailors in and out those boats, coaxed life out equipment, fixed broke boats, rigged boats, made great suggestions for the KMAC course layout, rescued a floundering paddleboarder, dropped marks, moved marks, shouted encouragement; you name it, they did it. Huzzah all around. thank you Jamie for making it happen and every little thing you did. Photos will follow tomorrow.

Fernanda Castelo, a frequent visitor and racer with Challenged Sailors San Diego passed away on December 12th. Fernanda was an excellent sailor and was noted for her competitiveness and desire to do the best she could. She was very active in BAADS in San Francisco, helped found California Inclusive Sailing in Newport Beach, and was actively involved in getting Hoyer-type lifts installed at yacht clubs in the Bay Area. Fernanda was injured many years ago. Prior to her injury s...he was a dancer/cast member at Disneyland in addition to other work. She often mentioned that sailing was freeing for her in the same way that dancing was. Fernanda mentored engineering students at Stanford to develop designs for accessible mobility tools. It was at Stanford where she had an accident that caused her to live in an assisted living facility for the last year and half of her life. Fair winds and following seas, Fernanda. Sail on!
