The Cerritos College Art Gallery is physically closed through Spring 2021, so our Fall 2020 exhibition will be going mobile. Inspired by art historical precedents - such as Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-Valise, the Fluxus Fluxkits, and Wallace Berman’s Semina mail art project - our upcoming Fall show will consist of a limited-edition ‘exhibition in a box.’ In the spirit of mutual aid food banks, we will be distributing these boxes free-of-charge (while supplies last) to anyone t...hat requests one. Watch our Facebook page, our Instagram account, and the gallery website for further instructions in the coming weeks on how to reserve a box for yourself. The exhibition, ‘Hindsight is 2020: Dispatches from the Near Apocalypse,’ includes miniaturized reproductions of works by numerous contemporary artists exploring the events and anxieties of the last year, including: plague, virality, isolation, remote contact, face masks, parenting/childhood under lockdown, work/food/housing precarity, struggles in the service industry, plight of frontline/essential workers, disinformation campaigns, conspiracy theories, constitutional crisis, the rise/return of fascism, armed militias, police/state violence, protesting bodies, structural racism, the climate crisis, wildfires, etc. Full artist list to be announced soon.

The Cerritos College Art and Design Department stands in support of our Black brothers and sisters as we grieve with the families of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Atatiana Jefferson, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin and countless others who have been victims of bigotry and police brutality. We recognize that systemic racism exists in America and that it is a physical, psychological, emotional and existential threat to our soc...iety and all of our students. Accordingly, we continue to uplift, elevate, amplify, and celebrate the diversity and free expression of our student body and we thoroughly and roundly reject and repudiate prejudice, hate, and bigotry, including the historical policies, words, actions, and attitudes that violently and unjustly target Black communities and individuals. We recognize that these events erode the public trust and they are traumatic to our student population. As a Department, we promote equity and inclusion in the art and design field and will continue to provide supports for students in the following ways: 1) Continue to provide opportunities for inclusive community engagement and friendships through art exhibitions, student-led clubs, and creative initiatives available to all students. 2) Continue to exhibit and invite diverse professionals of color in the art and design field to present their work and share their career pathways as examples for our students. 3) Continue to keep open lines of communication with faculty, students, and administrators to discover and implement more ways to support equity and inclusion in our Department. 4) Continue to provide support services so that students can reach out to counselors, mental health professionals, and faculty if they have felt threatened or experienced discrimination in any way while on campus.

The catalog for Young Joon Kwak’s Art+Tech Artist-in-Residence exhibition, Dilectio, is finally complete and available to preview online. The 148-page book includes photographic documentation of the work from the exhibit, as well as the residency period. It also includes newly commissioned essays by Dani Bustillo, Nikki Darling, James MacDevitt, and the artist, as well as a photo essay, Queering the Workshop, by Mark Flanders. Dilectio is an exhibition of work produced by LA...-based artist Young Joon Kwak during their time as the 2019 Cerritos College Art+Tech Artist-in-Residence. Created using the specific equipment and processes available at the Cerritos College Plastics and Composites facilities, combined with their own unique artistic practice, Kwak’s work in Dilectio explores the parallel contemporary paranoias of plastic as a dangerous industrial material and plasticity as a mode of being. https://www.cerritosgallery.com/new/dilectio.html

Thank you to everyone that joined us at the online award ceremony and reception for the annual student art exhibition. At one point we had over 112 participants logged in to the zoom-based event including faculty, student artists, friends and family, our generous donors the Demott-Feldman’s, and Cerritos College president Dr. Fierro. That’s a lot of love in one virtual space. Together we viewed the online version of the catalog and gave out over $5,200 in awards and scholarsh...ips with funding provided by donors like the Demott-Feldman’s, numerous faculty donors, and the Associated Students of Cerritos College. The exhibition catalog, which includes over 130 pieces created by over 100 student artists can now be previewed online in its entirety at: http://www.cerritosgallery.com/new/sae2020.html (Note: The catalog is best viewed in full-screen mode, which is only available on a monitor, not a mobile device).

What Once Was ... Thomas Casey Digital Photograph 13 x 19 inches... The 2020 Cerritos College Student Art Exhibition will be held online this year. But that’s pretty much the only thing that’s really changed. A jurist will still select multiple winners in media-specific categories and the Art department will still give out over $4,000 in awards to student artists with the help of ASCC and the Cerritos Foundation. All participating artists will also receive a free copy of the physical exhibition catalog. While we await this year’s jurist selections and the completion of the catalog in the next couple weeks, the Art Gallery will feature select works from the exhibition on Instagram and Facebook. Be sure to Like/Follow to receive these ongoing updates and features. #studentart #studentartexhibition #sae #sae2020 @cerritoscollege @cerritoscollegepres @cerritoscollegefoundation @cerritoscollegeceramics @cerritoscolleged_p @cerritoscollegewoodworking @cerritosstudentgov @cerritos_ascc @talonmarks

The Cerritos College Visual and Cultural Studies Program is a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary AA degree unique in the California Community College system. Building upon such traditional programs as Art History, Film Studies, Ethnic Studies, and Gender Studies, students are free to mix and match across a broad range of areas of specialization. The four papers assembled in this third volume of the self-published journal, WOKE, present just a sampling of the many papers and ...independent research projects pursued by students enrolled in courses within the program this year. In her essay, Madame de Pompadour: Mother of Rococo, Yumi Jung Gerard explores the intertwined political and aesthetic influences of this grande dame of 18th Century France. Brad Eichar, in his essay, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Architectural Homage to Native America, examines the ways that indigenous American culture influenced the design principles of the great modernist architect. In Making American History Great Again: DDXXVII Edition, Jesse Deniz exposes the core influences of radical white supremicist thought on the current political climate through a comparative deep dive into the film American History X. And, finally, Isabelle Goodwin, in The Evolution of Little Women and the Timeless Feminine Ideal presents the multiple ways Louisa May Alcott’s feminist novel has been interpreted via the numerous film adaptations since its original 1868 publication. Individually, these papers represent milestone acheivements for these young scholars; together, however, they represent the very best of Cerritos College’s Visual and Cultural Studies program and we could not be more pleased to share them with a wider audience via this wonderful journal. https://www.blurb.com/b/10124517-woke-a-journal-of-visual-a Note: Click Preview and then go fullscreen using the arrow buttons to scroll through the entire publication.
