Cerritos College has redesigned its curriculum to prepare students for certifications in skills such as welding, where certifications are required for workers who wish to labor on structures in LA county. A welding certificate also puts workers up from the $12 per hour range into the $16 per hour range minimuma compelling lure for jobseekers. Students can then continue taking classes once they are employed and gain other certifications that lead to even higher wages. Read more http://www.economicmodeling.com//giving-students-a-fighti/

On February 26, students had the opportunity to tour ROMAC Supply Company and Ink Systems Inc. in Commerce, CA. Students enjoyed learning about careers in the industry and taking the tour. The goal of the tour is to decrease drop-out rates, increase employer engagement, improve quality of career decision making and tie school-to-real-world for 7 -12th graders. This initiative is part of the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Technology Linked Learning (AMETLL) grant. ... SELACO WIB, working in conjunction with Cerritos College-Technology Division and 5 school districts (ABC Unified School District, Downey Unified School District, Lynwood Unified School District, Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District and Paramount Unified School District) plans to build awareness of the variety of careers available, connect the related postsecondary education and encourage identification of career interest for middle through high school students. In addition, the grant will create exposure and awareness of career options and workplace environments; knowledge of skills for in-demand occupations within manufacturing and engineering as well as training requirements and preparation; understanding of peer and parental influences and effectively connect the students to the workplace. Stay turned for more of our efforts! #ametll #engineering #manufacturing #linkedlearning
