Fifteen year old Mary Kawena Pukui began collecting proverbs and sayings of the Hawaiian culture. This work continued throughout her lifetime along with many other educational and cultural endeavors. An expression of contempt for a person who is so lazy he uses goat hides instead of mats, which require work to make, for his bedding.
