CCSF Vet family, please read the message below from CalVet's Associate Governmental Program Analyst/Minority & Underrepresented Veterans Rakesh "Ricky" Pal: Dear Fellow Veterans and Veterans Advocates, On behalf of the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) and the Minority and Underrepresented Veterans Division (MUVD), I am honored to inform you of our upcoming Suicide Prevention Webinar. ... Rising suicide rates among service members and veterans over the past decade have raised public and professional concerns. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. military. The effects of suicide go beyond the person who acts to take his or her life: it can have a lasting effect on family, friends, and communities. CalVet launched an initiative tailored toward suicide prevention efforts by providing tools and resources for veterans and their family members. Join us on Friday, July 24, 2020, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. for our Suicide Prevention webinar. The CalVet MUVD and Veterans Services Division have collaborated with the VA Central California Health Care System, AV Vet Center, and U.S. VETS Outside the Wire to provide a free webinar that will cover an interactive conversation about suicide prevention. Furthermore, we will discuss how the stressors of the COVID-19 crisis and how it can cause emotional distress or anxiety which lead to suicidal thoughts. Additionally, veterans will have the opportunity to learn about state and federal benefits they have earned. Register in advance for this webinar here: https://suicide-prevention-webinar.eventbrite.com/ Sign up for the CalVet MUVD Roster at www.calvet.ca.gov/MinorityVets/Pages/Roster.aspx to stay connected and to receive updated information about benefits, programs, service, events, and resources throughout California. Please stay in touch and share your feedback with us as we continue to develop innovative ways to connect with our California veterans. Visit our website at www.calvet.ca.gov, where you may find additional information on veteran resources. I encourage you to visit us on www.facebook.com/CalVetMinorityVets where we can continue our conversation. Best Regards, Rakesh Ricky Pal

I’ve been a software engineer for more than 20 years, and every few years, I’m asked whether I want to be a manager. As you become more senior in your career, ...you typically have the option to go into management or become a specialist. At the Facebook company, you also have the option to be the person who uncovers big opportunities to drive change, dives deep into the system to find a solution, and rallies people to make it happen. There’s always room to grow and lead, whether you’re a manager, seasoned engineer, or someone who’s just starting out in your role or career. Facebook’s bottom-up culture means that personal growth is only limited by you, and the biggest opportunity for growth is identifying what those opportunities are and how you’re going to tackle them. You don’t have to love your job at every moment, but if you can zoom out and see yourself making a difference every day, you know your efforts are worth it. This is the mindset I live by.
