Notable Women of Humboldt County Polly Conrad and Elizabeth Hickox Polly Conrad was a Wiyot woman known for being one of the few survivors of the Indian Islan...d Massacre in 1860. Twelve years after the massacre, Elizabeth Hickox Polly’s daughterwas born, later to become one of the most skilled and well-known North Coast basket weavers after learning the skill from her mother. Her even weaving, extensive use of black maidenhair fern overlay (which is a notoriously difficult material to use), and innovative basket shapes make her work stand out. Two of Elizabeth’s baskets are on display in Nealis Hall.
