"This has helped keep thousands of people in their homes during the state of emergency, but we know that this is simply not enough." CJJC Counselor/Organizer Kaija Carter shares our Oakland eviction moratorium victory, and why we're continuing the fight to #CancelDebt and #CancelRent. español abajo On Wednesday, we witnessed what white supremacy has sown in this country, as well as the fruits of Black-led organizing. We saw the incredible power of organizers in Georgia which determined control of the Senate. And we saw armed white vigilantes launch an attack on our democracy in our nation’s capital. After a coordinated disinformation campaign that failed to overturn a democratic election, we’re not surprised that, in a country founded on white supremacy,...Continue reading
COVID-impacted renters are being told they need to get out of their apartments by February 1. Up to 2 million reported that they were afraid they would be unable to pay rent this month and many more are burdened with massive rent debts. We need Gavin Newsom and the legislature to pass #AB15 ASAP and stop these evictions. Email your legislator here! https://actionnetwork.org//support-ab-15-16-keep-renters-/
The people have decided! We are so inspired by the Black, Latinx and Indigenous organizers and communities that were the deciding factor in advancing key battles for justice during this election season. Your joy and dedication have determined the conditions in which we must continue to struggle for #CommunityFutures. We will continue to build power in and defend our communities. We will hold the new administration and local officials accountable to learning from and advancing solutions from frontline communities. #CancelRent #DefundPolice #JustTransition #AbolishICE Art by Favianna Rodriguez
The power is with the people. Rise with labor tomorrow to demand we #CountEveryVote https://www.facebook.com/events/385148059535011/
Find your polling place. Remember, if you have not registered, you can register at your polling place. AND... here's another link to the Same Day Voter Registration page. Same Day Voter Registration is available at county election offices. https://www.sos.ca.gov/elec/voter-registration/same-day-reg
Just like we prepare for hurricanes or wildfires, we need to prepare for this election and the days that follow. We face a structurally biased political system rooted in racism, xenophobia, homophobia/transphobia and patriarchy. Through this challenging time, we turn to each other to remember that we are part of a national and global majority of people searching for justice and a better life. We must make sure ALL our votes are counted and that we challenge voter suppression ...locally and across the country. No matter the outcome of this historic election we will continue to build power for Black and Latinx communities for the long haul. Join Causa Justa at the Bay Resistance November 4 rally at Frank Ogawa Plaza, Oakland at noon. Get updated on what is happening with the election results and how to plug into organizing for the long term. https://www.facebook.com/events/987322478402216
Alicia Keys singing with Brandi Carlile, carries a message for us all. "When you're all alone its a quiet breeze, but when you band together its a choir of thunder and rain....." Right To The City Alliance It Takes Roots Grassroots Global Justice Alliance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUBRZoixNJ8
We might not know the results of the election on November 3rd, and that’s okay. As more voters cast their ballot by mail, states need time to ensure every vote is counted before announcing results - because every vote MUST be counted. We’ll be in Frank H. Ogawa Plaza from 12-3pm on Nov. 4th to plan for organizing around the election and beyond. There will be outdoor space for art, somatics, kids activities, and more! #counteveryvote https://www.facebook.com/events/2669159580005606
¡Levanta tu voz! Let your voice be heard. Vote! Lalo Alcaraz
Powerful new report from PolicyLink shows CA had nearly two million rent-burdened households of color...two years before #COVID19. As unemployment continues to rise, it's no wonder that 20% of Latino and 18% of Black renters households in CA are behind on rent. We couldn't/or could barely afford rent before, and we certainly can't now. Racially-biased gov. policies, predatory practices, market failures & other inequities have been displacing, criminalizing, and extracting resources from our communities for years. We organize for #CommunityFutures #BeyondRecovery because this is not a normal our people can return to. #cancelrent #yesonPropI #YesOn21 https://www.policylink.org/re/housing-justice-in-california
6-15% of SF renters have filed for unemployment. Up to 7,650 renter households are at high risk of homelessness. Seven months into the pandemic, renters have already accumulated $196 million RENT DEBT. Vote YES ON PROP I to tax property sales over $10 million, incentivize landlords to sell their properties to the city and nonprofits, and erase the rent debt of thousands of San Francisco families. #YesOnPropI

One year after Santiago's streets were jammed by protesters, they were filled with revelers, ecstatic over the results of a national plebiscite. There were music and fireworks. Signs declared "Renace Chile" Chile Reborn. "Many Chileans see this as a turning point, an opportunity to end social inequalities that led to last year's mass protests....They also voted to elect an assembly of 155 citizens, to write a new constitution. Chileans have many demands, including the right to better pensions, health care, and education, and greater recognition for Indigenous people. #OrganizingGetsTheGoods

We must face some very difficult questions. We need to, for instance, attend to racism as it is expressed in mortality rates. We need to contend with the economic ramifications, personal and collective, of what happens when people die. We begin to confront what each of us truly believes the lives of people are worth, and whether, say, Black lives, in fact, matter. We are confronted with the value of life; not the ostensible life to which so-called pro-lifers refer most often, but actual living persons.
