Our good friend in San Diego, John Martinez, passed away this morning. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not let... your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. In my Father's house, there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way." Thomas said to him, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brother, John. In this life you embraced him with your tender love; deliver him now from every evil and bid him eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome him into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen. Lord God, you are attentive to the voice of our pleading. Let us find in your Son comfort in our sadness, certainty in our doubt, and courage to live through this hour. Make our faith strong through Christ our Lord. Amen. Eternal rest grant unto John, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. May the choirs of angels come to greet you. May they speed you to paradise. May the Lord enfold you in His mercy. May you find eternal life. The Lord is my light and my help; It is he who protects me from harm. The Lord is the strength of my days; Before whom should I tremble with fear? May the choirs of angels come to greet you. May they speed you to paradise. May the Lord enfold you in His mercy. May you find eternal life. There is one thing I ask of the Lord; That He grant me my heartfelt desire. To dwell in the courts of our God. Every day of my life in His presence. May the choirs of angels come to greet you. May they speed you to paradise. May the Lord enfold you in His mercy. May you find eternal life. Amen. Go forth, Christian soul, from this world in the name of God the almighty Father, who created you, in the name of Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who suffered for you, in the name of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out upon you, go forth, faithful Christian. May you live in peace this day, may your home be with God in Zion, with Mary, the Virgin Mother of God, with Joseph her spouse, and all the Angels and Saints. Amen.

September 15 Our Lady of Sorrows Memorial... And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, ‘Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed,’ (Lk. 2:34-35). As Jesus hung on the Cross, the prophecy of Simeon was fulfilled and Our Lady’s heart was pierced with sorrow. Today, we are asked to contemplate Mary’s role at the foot of the Cross, as she shared with Her Son in His compassion for sinners. As we meditate on her sorrow, may it bring us into the joy that is now available to us through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection.
