CATCH 12.10.2020

With good hiking weather this week, we want to remind you of some important safety tips for your next trip to the trails. While close to home, our open spaces a...re wild places with some risks. 1. The COSCA open space system is home to ‘free-range’ rattlesnakes. We have had a busy season so far and already one person has been bitten. Always watch where you step, and if you see a snake, back away and give it some distance. This is what your phone’s zoom lens is for, and a bite will not get many likes on Instagram. 2. With some late rains we have had more ticks out on the trails this season. When you come off the trail, make sure to check yourself and others for ticks because some may carry Lyme disease. 3. Bring plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen. We have had several people require rescues for heat illnesses in the past few weeks and we do not want it to happen to you. 4. If you would like to get outside without being close to other people, we recommend you avoid busy places like Wildwood Park. We have so many other trails to explore where it is easy to spread your wings. Find a new trail on our website: www.conejo-openspace.org. 5. Please do not swim in the stream at Wildwood Park or in the pool at Paradise Falls. Most of this water comes straight from the streets in the surrounding community...yes, the nasty stuff you see rotting in the gutters. You may take home more than you bargain for if you do swim. 6. Lastly, lookout for yourself and others. Our community is safer when we all do our part to make a safe environment for everyone. If someone needs help, please help them get it.
