The Castro CBD (Community Benefit District) is considering adding safety cameras on private property at key intersections on Market Street, Church Street and Castro Street. These cameras would focus on the public realm to provide video for evidentiary purposes only, with stringent privacy controls that prevent direct viewing by the public or authorities. Live streaming of video will not be available and video would only be provided for evidentiary purposes with a confirmed in...cident report. Consideration of a camera program comes from concerned residents and a need to address public safety issues in our district. Video evidence can serve as an unbiased witness to assist both victims of crimes (or vehicle accidents) as well as a defense for those unjustly charged with a crime. Please take this survey to provide your thoughts. Survey is open until 2/8/2021: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CBD-Cameras

What are your thoughts on a public safety camera program in the Castro & Upper Market? Cameras would only be available for evidentiary purposes and to provide an unbiased witness to crime and accidents. Please take this survey to let us know your thoughts. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CBD-Cameras
SF to start shut down 10pm on Sunday. San Francisco and the other Bay Area Counties are opting into the Regional Stay at Home Order that Governor Newsom announced Thursday, December 3rd for regions with less than 15% capacity in ICU beds. Although San Francisco and the Bay Area have not yet met that threshold, the City in partnership with Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Santa Clara and City of Berkeley, is preemptively implementing these restrictions. ... As of 10 p.m. on Sunday, December 6, San Francisco will close all personal services, outdoor dining, public outdoor playgrounds, outdoor museums, zoos and aquariums, drive-in theaters, and open-air tour busses and boats. Additionally, San Francisco will halt indoor limited personal training in gyms and limit outdoor gyms and outdoor fitness classes to a maximum group size of 12 people at a time, including instructors and participants. Low contact retail such as pet grooming, electronics or shoe repair services, may only operate in a curbside drop-off context. All other retail, including grocery stores must reduce capacity to 20%, and all indoor businesses that are open to the public, such as retail stores, must create a metering system to manage and enforce indoor customer capacity. This metering system must be in place no later 10 p.m. on Sunday December 6, when other amended order becomes operative. https://sf.gov/step-by-step/reopening-san-francisco

In memory of the Jonestown massacre on November 19, 1978, lights are beginning dimmed in the Castro, #castrosf. The Castro CBD has turned off the rainbow lights and The Seed in #janewarnerplaza In Memorium: On the morning of the 19th of November 1978, San Franciscans learned that over 900 of their friends and family members, among them the late Congressman Leo Ryan were dead in the jungle in and around Port Kaituma and Georgetown, Guyana. The majority of the dead were from t...he black community in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area who had been members of the People’s Temple of the Disciples of Chirst and had been forced and manipulated into a ritual suicide by poisoning and gunfire by the church’s leader, Jim Jones. When Jones had spirited away his entire congregation from the Western Addition to Guyana overnight because of increasing reports of abuse and false imprisonment, Congressman Ryan of San Mateo along with his aide Jackie Speier and U.S. media representatives went on a congressional fact-finding mission to verify the welfare of these U.S. citizens and aid their return to the Bay Area if they wished. In the early evening hours of November 18th, shortly after Ryan and the defecting members left the Jonestown compound, Jones sent his death squad to shoot them at the Port Kaituma airstrip killing five including Ryan, and leaving 11 to die (among them, Speier.) At the camp Jones instructed his 900+ remaining followers to drink Flavor-Aid laced with cyanide and shot or forced the drink on anyone who refused. He then shot himself. Survivors would wait overnight to be rescued. On this 42nd anniversary of the massacre of over 900 (mostly black) members of our community and the late Congressman Ryan, we ask that our businesses and residents on Castro Street and all of San Francisco dim their lights for five minutes at 7:00 p.m. on November 18, 2020 in memory of those lives that were lost on our watch. #jonestown #blacklivesmatter #leoryan

We want the status quo to change. And the status quo is one where every single day, most of us see one or two individuals out there who need a mental health in...tervention seemingly not getting it, Mandelman said. We can’t wait until COVID-19 is behind us to address these issues. That's why street-crisis response teams were identified as a top recommendation by the Meth Task Force, are a key component of Mental Health SF, and are a top priority in Mayor Breed's proposed budget. I am grateful for this important step towards full implementation of this critical reform.
