Happy World Wetlands Day! What are wetlands, might you ask? A wetland is an area of land that is flooded with water permanently or seasonally. The ones you may see in and around our coastal parks are coastal or tidal wetlands. These ecosystems are essential for a multitude of reasons: they provide habitat to fish and wildlife, they protect and improve water quality, mitigate the impacts of flooding, you name it! But our wetlands are in trouble. Studies show that the world is ...losing thousands of acres of wetlands each year. Wetlands continue to face challenges from agricultural runoff, urban development, introduction to invasive species, and much more. We must proactively take steps to protect them from these stressors in order for them to thrive and function as a pristine wilderness would. So go out and visit your local wetland, enjoy its beauty and find out ways that you can help - whether that’s at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands (pictured), the San Mateo Creek down by San Onofre State Beach, or any wetland near you! #worldwetlandsday #worldwetlandsday2021 #wetlands #wetlandsconservation #castateparksoc #bolsachicawetlands #bolsachicastatebeach

Did you know that the ocean sequesters roughly one-third of the atmospheric carbon dioxide released by human activity? Our oceans play a vital role at mitigating the effects of anthropogenic climate change, but we cannot rely on the ocean alone. While we depend on the ocean to regulate our climate, we have also seen the dangers of pushing it beyond its threshold. Throughout the years, human practices have led to a rise in sea level and an increase in ocean acidification. Our ...very own shoreline at San Onofre State Beach is threatened by erosion and climbing sea levels (see diagram). On the coattails of Climate Week, we take the time to recognize how essential the ocean is in our battle against a warming climate and consider what we can do beyond one week that will create lasting change. How will you help our oceans combat climate change? San Onofre State Beach #climateweek #climatechange #pacificocean #castateparksoc #sanonofrestatebeach #erosion #sealevelrise

Last week, some of the nesting Snowy Plovers that call Huntington State Beach home were met with a devastating surprise. These species are labeled as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act due to a number of reasons including loss of habitat due to human impact. What happened last week serves as a reminder that it is our responsibility to share our shores with these little birds so that we all may safely enjoy the beach. Spread the word and educate others so something like this will not happen again! #snowyplover #huntingtonstatebeach https://www.ocregister.com//western-snowy-plovers-were-th/
