Understaffing is a widespread problem in the United States, especially in California, which has a higher proportion of elderly residents than many other states. Every year, patients die in nursing homes from preventable injuries, illnesses, and complications. When illness or death results from the patient receiving improper care in a residential nursing home facility, the patient’s family might have grounds for a [ 433 more words ] http://elderabusenews.com//can-wearable-medical-devices-h/

The stereotype of nursing home neglect is of nursing home staff doing less than the required minimum to care for patients who reside in the nursing home. For example, if a patient suffers pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, because nursing home staff left him in the same position for too long, it could be considered nursing home abuse. If a nurse at an overstaffed nursing home does not change her gloves between giving IVs to patients, and one or more patients contract an infection, the nursing home could also face a nursing home abuse lawsuit. 443 more words [ 421 more words ] http://elderabusenews.com//unjust-eviction-from-a-nursing/

If the conversation lags at a neighborhood barbecue, try asking the people seated near you about the summer jobs they had as teenagers. You are sure to hear stories of workplaces where workers cut corners in order to get home reasonably soon after closing and managers ignored or even encouraged this behavior. The tales of poorly maintained restaurant kitchens and germy public swimming pools are sure to make your skin crawl. [ 440 more words ] http://elderabusenews.com//class-action-lawsuit-alleges-t/

One of the reasons that nursing home neglect can continue for an extended period before anyone on the outside notices is that many nursing home patients are too ill to speak up about it. Often, nursing home abuse is only detected and reported after relatives who visit the patient in the nursing home notice that the patient has pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, or is generally less active, healthy, and mobile than he or she was at the last visit. If you have ever tried to make an interstate road trip in a single day, you have probably experienced firsthand how difficult and dangerous it is to drive when you are tired. If it is difficult for a road-weary and sleep-deprived driver to operate a vehicle that is carrying just a few people and perhaps some suitcases, imagine how hard is to drive safely after seven or more hours on the road when the vehicle subject to your bleary-eyed decision-making skills weighs numerous tons and is carrying enough food to feed an entire city. Preventable infections are among the most common and most disturbing signs of nursing home abuse. Title 22, the California law that sets the standards for patient care in residential nursing facilities, requires that nursing staff take appropriate measures to prevent the spread of infections. Unfortunately, though, given the state’s aging population, many nursing homes in California are understaffed, and proper infection control is difficult to maintain when nursing home employees have an unmanageable workload. The cliché that the things that truly make your life enjoyable do not have a price tag is true. In fact, most people do not even realize how much their happiness depends on being able to walk without pain, drive without fear, or rely on the emotional support of a family member unless they have lost those things temporarily or permanently. Case Barnett Law is proud to announce that we are launching a new practice area: Worker's Rights for Nurses. Many of you know that we sue nursing homes and it may seem counter-intuitive that we will now also represent nurses (who are often on the other side of the deposition table in our elder abuse cases). Nurses are often wrongly blamed for the deterioration of patients in nursing homes and hospitals. Many people don't realize that these places are usually understaffed.... Nurses are spread thin and face impossible working conditions. They are forced to work long hours and double shifts, skip meal breaks, pump breast milk in dirty closets and work over-time without pay. Nurses care and want to do what is best for their patients. However, systemic issues at the corporate level make it impossible to do so. Decisions are made by high-ranking corporate officers who place profit above patient safety. Corporate greed is the biggest impediment to nurses and their ability to provide safe patient care. The neglect in nursing homes and hospitals is offensive. We are infuriated with what we see and, for this reason, we are launching this new sector of our firm. We will fight for nurse's rights and continue our efforts to protect both the elderly and the people who care for them.

Despite all the news about nursing home neglect, most employees of nursing homes really do care about the health of the patients there. Understaffing is a major problem in nursing homes in California, as well as in other states; the number of doctors, nurses, and other staff members on duty is just not always sufficient to ensure the best health outcomes for all patients. Look carefully at your driver’s license; it has an alphabetic code referring to what kinds of vehicles you are licensed to drive. Most drivers in California have a basic class C license, which allows you to drive a car, van, pickup truck, or small farm vehicle such as a tractor. Class A and class B licenses are for bigger, heavier vehicles; it requires a much greater level of skill to drive them, and thus, the licensing requirements are much stricter. When I read the recent news about a 29-year-old woman who gave birth after being raped in a nursing home I was filled with rage. Chills shot up my spine and hot anger filled my body. Then, I remembered, THIS.... THIS is why we do what we do. KABC Los Angeles just released this video detailing the incident. The young victim had been at the nursing facility for more than 14 years after she suffered a near-drowning incident that left her in a vegetative state. You have probably seen co-workers and party guests show up at work and parties, respectively, sporting bandages, and then proceed to tell stories about the freak accident that resulted in the injury. Freak accident stories are quite entertaining, as long as the injury is minor, and the weirder the circumstances of the accident, the better. Sprained your finger lifting a baby out of a bouncy seat?
