Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, children and families have been isolated and under more financial and emotional stress, which historically, can fuel a rise in cases of child abuse and neglect. During the pandemic, the reports of child abuse and neglect have been declining in many states, yet some states are projecting an increase in child abuse and neglect when our communities return to some semblance of normal. We don’t know exactly how the world will look for children and families in the months ahead. What we do know is that communities have a mandate to support children and families and work to prevent abuse and neglect during these difficult times. During National Child Abuse Prevention Month, CASA of Solano County reminds everyone to keep eyes on children and support families during these challenging times.

Annelies Marie "Anne" Frank was a German-Dutch diarist of Jewish heritage. One of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust, she gained fame posthumously with the publication of The Diary of a Young Girl, in which she documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. It is one of the world's best known books and has been the basis for several plays and films.

"Roughly 6% of U.S. children, ages 6 through 17, are living with serious emotional or behavioral difficulties, including children with autism, severe anxiety, depression and trauma-related mental health conditions. Many of these children depend on schools for access to vital therapies. When schools and doctors' offices stopped providing in-person services last spring, kids were untethered from the people and supports they'd come to rely on." https://www.npr.org/.../ive-tried-everything-pandemic-has...

We would like to congratulate one of our Volunteer Supervisors, Dana Martinez, on five years with CASA of Solano County. In her spare time, she has advocated for two youth. Yesterday we had the pleasure of swearing in 7 new volunteers. Child abuse has not stopped because of this pandemic and our community continues to step up to the challenge of becoming advocates to be the voice of foster children. Thank you for all you will do for our children.

The moon shines on a frightful scene. Ghosts and goblins to make you scream! Jack-o-’lanterns with eerie light. Illuminate the darkest night. In the Witching Hour banshees wail. Black cats screech and lash their tails. Reverse the numbers in thirteen. And then you’ll know it’s Halloween! Happy Halloween!

There’s a child in foster care waiting for a CASA volunteer like you. Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a Court Appointed Special Advocate? CASA volunteers are ordinary people who make a difference in the life of a child in foster care. If you are looking for a meaningful way to help build stronger communities in the future by empowering the youth of today, consider becoming a CASA volunteer. Attend our November 4, 2020 Information Sessions to find out more.

Teens need support and guidance before they age out of the foster care system. Each year in our community, a handful of young people turn 18 and emancipate from the foster care system. Aging out of foster care without a life plan or preparation puts these vulnerable youth at great risk. These risks include homelessness, unemployment, substance abuse, criminal involvement, and mental health issues. About one in five teens become homeless within a year after leaving foster car...e, and one in four emancipated foster youth will be incarcerated within the first two years after they leave the system. Protecting older youth in foster care and even those who have aged out and are out on their own is a matter of life and death during this kind of global crisis, says Sandra Gasca-Gonzalez, vice president of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Center for Systems Innovation. CASA programs address the unique challenges faced by older foster youth and work to prevent these trends, connect them with available resources and persons to contact to help youth access the benefits they are eligible to receive, so our young adults don’t fall through the cracks during this critical development stage.

She needs someone to help her apply for college. In California, only 50.8 percent of youth in foster care graduated from high school in 2017, while 28.8 percent dropped out, according to the state Department of Education. The remaining students may still be pursuing a GED or other alternative schooling, or are taking longer to complete high school. This graduation rate is about the same as the national average, though the rate varies state by state. Many advocates say foster students need more support and, most importantly, encouragement, earlier in their educational journey. The sooner a child in foster care is assigned a CASA volunteer, the sooner they can get the services they need and deserve to succeed in school and plan for a future that includes graduating from high-school and pursuing a college degree.

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader. John Quincy Adams. CASA volunteers are leaders in their community, ordinary people who care enough about youth in foster care to encourage them to plan for a successful future, no matter where they came from.

A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself. Oprah Winfrey Kids in foster care are often on their own when it comes to navigating the system. With a CASA volunteer by their side, they are reminded of the potential within them to build a future that’s better than their past.
