Todd Offenbacher and I just put up a new 4-pitch bolted 5.7 in South Lake Tahoe called Divided Sky. It’s the perfect first multi-pitch climb for beginning climb...ers or kids. It’s well-protected and is mostly 5.4-5.5 with a few 5.6 and 5.7 moves. In most US climbing areas there are very few 5.4-5.8 routes. Why? Establishing new climbs is expensive and time-consuming. Generally first ascentionists climb 5.11-5.13 and want to put up harder routes that are steeper and more challenging. But this is totally out of sync with most climbers who either climb at a more moderate level or want opportunities to climb with new climbers and their families. Todd saw this disconnect which was further reinforced on a family trip to Chamonix. At most European climbing areas, there are many more moderates climbs for kids, families and new climbers. The result is a huge gift to the mountain community. Divided Sky is named after the great bar down the road in Meyer’s. We highly recommend stopping by for a pint or snack after climbing the route. It’s one of the 20+ new routes Todd and friends have established in the Tahoe Basin that are 5.8 or easier. The other main area is Castle Rock off Kingsbury Grade.
