Most grape-grower/winemakers will tell you that 80% or more of winemaking begins with the vineyard. If you don’t have quality fruit, it is impossible to make quality wine. With our final pick of Grenache this morning, Harvest 2020 comes to a close. The last two months have been one for the books. In the midst of a global pandemic, and with numerous heat waves and a multitude of unforeseen challenges, we've pushed ourselves and our winery to our limits. The end is near...

I am often asked how I work side by side with my family every day. I believe for a lot of people, working with their parents, or even a family member, sounds like a headache. Truth be told, we butt heads. We get heated. The reason our "relationship" works in the long run, both business and personal, is that I have the utmost respect for my parents, and in turn they trust and respect me. We have our "roles," and although the lines often get blurred due to being a small family... business, we have each-others backs. I commend my parents for loving and respecting me, and being able to vocalize that love and respect, far more than the generation that came before them. It is an honor, not a tribulation, to work side by side with two amazing individuals. Brix is one of the most important measures we look at during harvest, but what exactly is it? Brix is a way to measure the sugar levels within any given grape. Knowing the sugar level is important because not only does it tell us when to harvest, but it has a direct correlation to the potential alcohol content of the wine made from those grapes. Throughout our "harvest time frame" (Sept/Oct), we are constantly in our vineyards taking samples, and testing for the respective b...rix content of that particular block and/or varietal, to see which sections are ripening fastest. In addition to brix, we look at pH and acidity levels to make sure our fruit is maintaining. During fermentation, we test the brix numerous times to make sure it's progressing properly.
