BLACK HISTORY MONTH SPOTLIGHT: Elijah McCoy Born in Canada in 1844 to parents who escaped slavery in Kentucky, Elijah McCoy's ingenuity brought world-wide recognition to his work that earned the phrase, "the real McCoy."... McCoy's family saved for his education and sent him to a boarding school in Edinburgh, Scotland at the age of 15 to study mechanical engineering. After completing his studies, McCoy attempted to start his professional career in Michigan; however, despite his credentials, racial barriers only afforded him a position with Michigan Central Railroad as a fireman responsible for oiling various train partsa very manual task. Fortuitously, his manual job of oiling train parts inspired his first of over 50 patents, a lubricator cup. His invention distributed oil evenly over the engine's moving parts and allowed trains to run for longer periods with reduced maintenance. McCoy's self-lubricating cup became wildly popular, spawning inferior imitations, to which the industry responded by demanding "the real McCoy" when purchasing his device. His industrious mind garnered him almost 60 patents and included designs for an ironing board, a lawn sprinkler, and many lubrication systems.

As you plan train travel for the Thanksgiving holiday and beyond, know that your health and safety on the Capitol Corridor remains our absolute priority. The pictures below show how our operating partner, Amtrak, is using a new cordless, chemical fogger/mister to disinfect surfaces daily. Used in medical and food preparation facilities, the disinfectant is highly effective against viruses. For more about our health and safety protocols, visit our website: https://bit.ly/3i5q620
