Saturday Morning Tinker Time

Cannibal Industries 14.04.2021

Are we entering a new generation of location sound recording? Let’s discuss: I will use a drill bit as an example. The fundamental shape of a drill bit has not changed much in the past 100 years. However there are new exotic coatings that can be applied to drill bits like AlTiN, DLC (Diamond Like Carbon), and porting to push coolant to the tip of the bit; all of these advances make it possible to drill holes deeper and faster than ever before. If we could send one of these dr...ill bits back in time, a machinist would be able to recognize it- but they would be completely astonished by it. In the industrial automation world, they are advancing into a new era that is being call Industry 5.0, in other words robotic automation for assembly lines has reached a distinct new generation. This includes cobots and mainly unmanned machining floors thanks to advanced AI. I believe that location sound has reached a similar point in evolution. The days of the Nagra could certainly be considered Location Sound 1.0. (1950-1990) The transition to digital recording without argument would be Location Sound 2.0 (1980-2020) In the last 5 years we started seeing very significant advances in cross brand control interconnectivity, 32 bit audio adoption, frequency hopping, Dante, etc. Like that humble machinist from a century ago, if a soundmixer in 1985 went into their storage and discovered a 2020 era recorder of magically teleported into their cart, I am sure they would recognize it for what it was but the level of advancement would cross over into the device being foreign as well. This is why I believe we have reached a defined mark in the evolution of location sound.
