Did you know that cover crops can help provide crucial habitat for honeybees and many other pollinators? The most important resources for pollinators are the pollen and nectar provided by flowering plants. Cover crops that flower can help pollinators meet their food requirements. Did you get the chance to see our beautiful flowering winter cover crop last year? Pollinators need more than just pollen and nectar. Most native bee species nest in the soil or in dead vegetation, w...hich cover crops can provide even if they do not flower, like our summer cover crop of Sorghum Sudan-grass. https://www.sare.org//Ec/Cover-Crop-Impacts-on-Pollinators
Compost is key to sequestering carbon in soil! This is why we apply compost each year to our California Department of Food and Agriculture's Healthy Soils Program plot. The Healthy Soils Program is about so much more than cover cropping. Adding compost is a key practice in order to feed microbes and build organic matter. One reason we keep losing organic matter from soils is that our focus is on feeding the plant, and we forget the needs of others who provide important services in soil like building organic carbon." As Kate Scow of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute put so well, "We need to feed the soil too."
