What would the COVID-19 virus mean for schools? The obstacles to teaching remotely were evident: American children have uneven access to home computers and broadband internet. Schools have limited expertise in providing instruction online on a large scale. And parents would be forced to juggle their own work responsibilities with what could amount to a vast, unplanned experiment in mass home-schooling, said Kevin Carey, vice president for education policy at New America, a think tank. https://news.yahoo.com/coronavirus-outbreak-u-mean-schools-

I’ve heard her story through my work in school safety, I’ve read her story, but hearing her story in person was profoundly impactful. Their plan was not there, but it was there, and any community can be ground zero for the next school tragedy. Safety and security don’t just happen- its collective work of the whole community, schools, teachers, law, fire, emergency management, public health, mental health, parents, and students. Almost all schools they have analyzed since 2...008 had lockdown plans, practiced drills, and knew what to do, yet it did not prevent it from happening. Over half were ended by non-law enforcement staff and not 1 of the 41 schools analyzed were ended by responding law enforcement agencies. Our system in dealing with children who are identified as at risk is severely broken. Coordination may be happening but not at the level it needs to be. Complacency of the not here attitude must change. Risk indicators were there and threat assessments were either not performed or performed poorly. 81% of attackers were victims of bullying, which enforces those assessments we do in our safe school planning process. If you aren’t actively tracking this at your school and identifying goals to mitigate and reduce this number, you need to start addressing this.

We here at CSG offer our support to the victims of this latest act of senseless violence targeting our most vulnerable population. That support goes well beyond thoughts and prayers and extends to action! Students, parents, and teachers - we must #INSIST on change. We refuse to speculate on this event, however, we know there will be an exhaustive report regarding this tragedy and the national pattern suggests that report may identify one or more safety systems did not mee...t expectations. The frustration is, had anyone conducted a critical audit of these systems BEFORE the event corrections could have been made. If there is going to be meaningful change, students, staff, and parents must #insist that critical and independent audits be conducted of all campus safety systems! From the New York Times: You would expect them to be more affected, but it’s just the reality that has plagued kids for so many years at this point...

"While teachers and administrators need to know how to respond to a gunfire crisis, the rise of active shooter training feels like an extreme and misguided approach" CSG is committed to creating a "perspective based" training, uniquely designed in cooperation with the stakeholders at each school. It is important to remember there is no "one size fits all" emergency response plan. While there are common best practices, each school presents unique challenges. Campus specific plans are the foundation of safety success. Contact CSG today for a free evaluation tool to assess the status of your Emergency Response Plans: [email protected]

CSG continuously urges schools and parents to avoid "knee-jerk" responses to campus safety matters. The article below describes the apparent issue with active shooter drills and the potential to cause more harm than good. "One problem with these drills is that some of them are so needlessly over the top that they almost seem designed to traumatize students."
