Camp Tawonga 09.11.2020

We hope that the teachings of Tawonga have served as flashes of light in the darkness of this year. Compassion, resilience, caring for our environment and each other, Jewish values to guide us home. If these lessons from Tawonga are in your heart, we urge you to contribute, if you haven’t already, to Tawonga Together, our ongoing emergency fundraising campaign tawonga.org/donate or venmo.com/camptawonga. Help us to close out 2020 strong. You will be offsetting a $4.2 million net revenue loss due to our 2020 season cancellation. We are moved by the outpouring of love from our community and are confident that Tawonga will survive this crisis. We are Tawonga together.

Today, we honor #IndigenousPeoplesDay, a holiday celebrated in lieu of Columbus Day. Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors the past, present and future of Native peoples in the U.S. and acknowledges the legacy of colonialism, which has devastated Indigenous communities historically and continues to negatively impact them today. Camp Tawonga is located on ancestral Mi-Wuk land, and our San Francisco office is located on ancestral Ohlone land. You can discover, acknowledge and learn about what land you occupy in California through this tool native-land.ca/. You can also support indigenous sovereignty by paying the @Shuumi Land Tax (sogoreate-landtrust.org/shuumi-land-tax) and learn more about Jewish partnerships with native people through exploring Jews on Ohlone Land (jewsonohloneland.org/).

What made Camp Director Becca Meyer shift from pursuing a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, and studying the brains of mice, to working at Tawonga? Check out our latest Journey to Tawonga to find out! tawonga.org/%f0%9f%93%bb-journeys-to-tawonga-becca-meyer/ Becca's story is part of a series of brief conversations about how different people stumble upon Tawonga in nonconventional ways and the impact it makes on their lives. #TawongaRadio
