To this end, our camp will continue to make space for trans* campers in our care to the best of our abilities, even if it’s hard, or messy to do so.

Today we would like to showcase former Arnold S. Nelson Scholarship recipient, Shannen Cohenshad! She was a former camper and attended California State University, Northridge (CSUN). We caught up with Shannen, and here is what she has to say: Why was going to college important to you? Going to college was important to me because I was expected to attend college after graduating from high school. I have always loved school and I wanted to continue my education to satisfy my h...unger for learning. I am a first-generation student and I understood early on in life that higher education could give me financial and emotional freedom. Financial security has always been a motivating factor for me. Having a career that I am passionate about has always been one of my life goals. College was my way to explore what I am interested in and to figure out what my career options are. What are you up to now? Currently, I am a second-year student at the University of Southern California studying occupational therapy. I keep myself busy with school, friends and family. Did you all know it was college week?! We're kicking off our College Week Scholar Showcase with our first alumni scholar, Jamie Jovel. Jamie is a former camper and attended California State University, Long Beach thanks to an Arnold S. Nelson Scholarship. We caught up with Jamie and here's what he had to say. Why was going to college important to you? My mom always stressed to me the importance of school and how happy she would be for me and all my siblings to graduate colle...ge. I had to do it for me and make her proud after all the sacrifices she made for me and my siblings. It was the least I could do for her. What are you up to now? I have been with Cigna Group insurance for four years as a Senior Group Claims Analyst with the long-term disability department. We wish Jamie all the best and continued success. He's another shining example of how Camp Bob Waldorf and our JBBBSLA Scholarship Program helps our community reach its full potential.
