Before the 1900s, married women in the United States could not own property, enter into contracts, or earn a salary. Instead, her husband had the control. Depending on what state she lived in, she may have gained some rights in the 1800s since states passed laws at their own pace. By 1900, all US women had gained the right to own and control property. That said, as recently as the 1970s, women still faced gender bias when it came to financial matters - a married woman could n...ot get a credit card without a signature from her husband! Pictured here is a declaration of Homestead for land in Campbell, CA by Susie Sbragia (Spragia) from 1904 - someting she could apply for thanks to laws that allowed her to own property as a married woman. The Homestead Act was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on May 20, 1862. A homesteader had only to be the head of a household or at least 21 years of age to claim up to a 160 acre parcel of land. Settlers from all walks of life including newly arrived immigrants, farmers without land of their own from the East, single women, and formerly enslaved people worked to meet the challenge of "proving up" and keeping this "free land". To "Prove up" each homesteader had to live on the land, build a home, make improvements and farm for 5 years. #womanshistory #campbellca #womenshistorymonth #campbellmuseums #Typetuesday Object ID: 2017.06.0001 See more

Tour the Ainsley house in your pajamas! Even though we are closed, we wanted to make our home accessible from the safety of your home! With our 360 degrees virtual tour, you can "walk" through each room in the house. Each room is full of curatorial tidbits - kind of like having a virtual docent (though without the charm of our in-person docents!). The video here is a sample of what the tour is like. https://www.campbellmuseums.com/ainsley-house-virtual-tour ... #historyathome #historyfromhome

This week in #typetuesday fails is this promotional calendar for Pioneer Federal Savings, 1980. Two of the three typefaces are bland. The color scheme is muddy and the faux leather background isn't fooling anyone! #campbellmuseums ID:1990.07.0013

This 1925 yearbook isn't quite a #typetuesday fail - it's just an incredibly #funky type choice! Probably one of the more extreme art deco era typefaces we have seen. #design #oriole #campbellmuseums ID:1997.14.0001

Happy first day of Winter! This photo was not taken in Campbell, likely it was sent to a Campbell resident by a friend or family member in a letter. The photo reads, "This picture was taken out in front of the house and you can see we have lots of snow at [the time] they were taken and now we have 5 times as much". #winter #snow #campbellmuseums ID:1974.01.2367

This week's Throwback Thursday features a black and white photo of former Campbell Fire Chief, Ethan Lanphear, standing in his garden. Lanphear served as chief of Campbell's Volunteer Fire Department from 1913 to 1919 and the city saw many improvements to its safety under his leadershipincluding the installation of fire hydrants around the city and the purchasing of chemical fire pumps. Following his tenure at the fire department, Lanphear entered the banking business. Photo captured in 1937. 1974.01.0770

A black and white postcard of the Benjamin O. Curry building on Campbell Avenue. The two-story Mission Revival style building was built in 1913 and housed Curry's real estate business, a drug store, and several other businesses throughout the years. The building is now the home of Blue Line Pizza. Photo captured between 1913 and 1917. 2009.05.0004
