CAL-ROD FEATURED CAR FOR DECEMBER 2016 By Doug Bithell YEAR: 1932 FORD 3 WINDOW COUPE COLOR: BLACK ... UPHOLSTERY: TAN LEATHER ENGINE: CHEVY 350 4-BOLT MAIN TRANS: 350 AUTOMATIC REAR END: 9 FORD WHEELS: BILLET SPECIALTIES Have you ever heard the song the beach Boys sang, Little Deuce Coupe? Well here is the car they were singing about! Only, this one does not have a flathead mill, lake pipes, or four on the floor. What it does have is a totally chromed out 350 mill, Magnaflow Exhaust System, a smooth Chevy 350 tranny, leather interior with a very comfortable Glide bench seat, really cool air conditioning, all wrapped up in gorgeous black body with pinstriping to match the color of the upholstery, louvered trunk, don’t forget that iconic Gene Hopcus 32 grill, and he’s got the pink slip daddy. Back in 2004 on Father’s Day Gene was nursing a banged up knee hobbling around and decided to go to the L. A. Roadster Show. His wife knowing he had been looking for a roadster said if you are going to the show why don’t you just buy one? Well Gene did not buy a roadster, but he did buy a Little Deuce Coupe. The car was complete when he bought it; that didn’t last long. He started changing things until he got it his way and to the beauty it is today. Gene says if you see it on a trailer, call the cops; it has been stolen. He drives it everywhere and has put on over 30,000 miles to places like Paso Robles (five times), Del Mar, Famoso Raceway Bakersfield, Havasu Arizona, Palm springs, Ventura several times, Santa Anita, Cool Cruise, and lots of local cruises. Another fine ride to bring credit to Gene and to Cal-Rods. We were in a hangar at Chino Airport and the lights reflected off Gene’s highly polished car. CAL-RODS CAR CLUB OF SAN GABRIEL VALLEY The Cal-Rods Car Club of San Gabriel Valley has been around since 1954, is going strong, and is looking for new friends & members. If you're interested in joining a car club we'd like to meet you! If you have a classic car, truck, or hot rod, or just want to share a love for old cars while getting together with new or old friends, we would like to see you at our monthly meetings, held at Finish Line Grill, 2201 N. White Avenue, Po...mona, Calif. Meetings start at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. Stop by to see if Cal-Rods is the club you’re looking for. Cal-Rods Car Club currently has over 200 members and is extremely active in the community. The Club's annual event, in its 10th year, is the Santa Anita Run with a Winner Car Show. The show is held on the infield of the Santa Anita Race Track, in Arcadia, Calif. This is not your typical car show and there’s something for everyone. You get to park on the infield grass of the historic race track with the backdrop of the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains, while relaxing, hanging out with friends, and watching live horse racing! There’s always plenty to eat and drink, a play and activity area for kids to enjoy, and you might as well hit a trifecta while you’re there. This show is the Club’s major fundraiser and allows us to donate thousands of dollars each year to select charitable organizations, like the Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Hospital, and veterans charities. This is a car show you won’t want to miss and you can get more info on the Cal-Rods website. Join us next year! In addition to the Santa Anita show, the Club also enjoys various other activities throughout the year. Cal-Rods members volunteer their time to help organize the weekly Twilight Cruise, held on the first Wednesday of each month at the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, in Pomona, Calif. They keep busy with an annual picnic, a Christmas dinner/dance, private car collection tours, shop and museum tours, and various other car shows and cruises. Cal-Rods is proud to say we're still cruising after all these years, and we definitely live up to it. At least 25 club members attended the October 16, 2016 Pomona Swap Meet & Classic Car Show, showing off their classic cars and trucks, shopping, sharing stories, & talking with people who stopped by to say hello.
