It appears that there are conflicting reports for retailers and their need for seasonal hires. According to Korn Ferry, 20 major US retailers were surveyed within the past month and found that 80% plan to hire the same or more seasonal workers than last year. However, the survey also found that 40% of these retailers believe that there will be fewer applicants. In separate report from the National Retail Federation, they believed that employment had already increased recently so the retailers wouldn’t have such a huge demand to hire seasonal workers during the holidays. The NRFs numbers indicated that retailers will hired anywhere between 500,000 and 550,000 which is down from last year at 575,000.

Amongst the chaos in the past couple of weeks, it appears that the temporary job market is fluctuating due to the destruction of the hurricanes. According to the Bureau of Statistics, nonfarm jobs fell by 33,000 on a seasonal adjusted basis by hurricanes Harvey and Irma, reducing the need to operate during this period. As for the temporary positions that were created in the wake of these storms, Rebecca Henderson, CEO of Randstad Sourceright said, FEMA has already filled h...undreds of temporary positions to help rebuild communities impacted in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Job openings for contingent talent have also spiked in the construction and hospitality sectors, and we expect to see similar demand from the engineering and environmental sectors in the coming weeks and months. As expected, these hurricanes had such a profound effect on the states that caused instability in the labor market. However, one of PNC’s chief economists, Gus Faucher stated, the economy is in decent shape, the labor market continues to improve, and we’ll bounce back to job growth in the final three months of 2017. Soon, there may be an increase in OSHA guidance when it comes to temporary employees. OSHA had lunched the temporary worker initiative in 2013 specifically to protect these employees from workplace hazards. There has been a push to convey more effectively that staffing employers and host employers both have a joint responsibility from their workplaces. Part of the temporary workers initiative, OSHA has released seven bulletins over the last year providing guidance to employers, with a couple more nearing completion.

The forecasted increase of the US staffing industry within the next year and a half will be sure to effect thousands working or looking for work. It is projected that the total staffing industry will increase by 6% by the end of 2018, totaling the US staffing revenue from 136.8 to $145.1 billion. The 6% increase or roughly $8.3 billion is for the total of all staffing, however a major portion of the expansion is the temporary staffing section. With the 2016’s temp staffing be...ing $118.7 billion and 2018 is projected to be $125.6 billion, the projected growth is believed to be in part by the declines in office/clerical to double-digit growth in travel nurse and education. It is also worth mentioning that the current model does not project growth to accelerate beyond the 3% in 2018, however SIA researcher believe that 2018 will show more opportunity for growth than 2017. Great article and insight into the benefits of utilizing a staffing agency. The relief staffing agencies provide their companies with is turning into more of a common practice and the sheer service that these agencies provide is becoming more and more indispensable.
