Newroz Piroz be

California Kurdish Community Center 05.01.2021

Dear valuable CKCC members, Today, January 13, marks the New Year in the Julian Calendar, a date celebrated by Kurdish people for thousands of years. Serê Salê marks a moment of joy, rebirth, change, and renewal. As an endangered tradition, it shows the value of having hope against adversity. This past year was marked by a global pandemic, a global economic crisis, and violent conflicts that have affected millions of lives, including the people of Kurdistan. Many have lost ...loved ones. All of us have been deprived of seeing and communing with our mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, and friends. Looking ahead to 2021, we would like to convey a message of hope. May this year bring health and joy to people and beings dearest for you, and may it bring peace and justice to the people of Kurdistan. Sincerely, CKCC.

Roboski Massacre It’s been 9 years since 34 civilian Kurdish boys and young men along the Turkey-Iraqi border were slaughtered on December 28th, 2011. None of those responsible for the air strike that killed the civilians has been brought to justice. Two of the victims' relatives are in prison, and 34 others are on trial. 19 of the 34 victims of the Roboski massacre were under 18. Only four people survived the attack, seriously injured. The young men between 13 and 38, whose ...families lived off the border trade, were returning from South Kurdistan when the bombing of Turkish fighter jets began at 9.37 pm. The bombing continued until 10.24 pm. Servet Encü stated that generations of people in his village and neighboring settlements had been in the smuggling business due to financial need. He added that Iraqi traders brought diesel oil or tea by vehicles to within 23 km (1.21.9 mi) of the border, and the villagers bought the goods and brought them home on trails, which took about two and a half hours. He said that the smuggling action had been well known to the border security forces As you might have heard that the Air Force Commander General Mehmet Erten who is thought to be responsible for the Roboski massacre was given a medal on November 28, 2012 in honor of his services. Instead of holding authorities responsible for murdering their own citizens, the government of Turkey is rewarding them. Major protests followed in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish cities. Protests were also held in Ankara[21] and Istanbul, where over 1,000 protesters gathered in Taksim Square; In Nicosia, around 300 Kurdish Cypriots marched on the Turkish embassy in Northern Cyprus, where Murat Kanatl, head of the left-wing New Cyprus Party, spoke to the crowd and accused Turkey of escalating tensions in the country's southeast. The demonstration ended peacefully. In Tehran, a group of Iranian Kurds demonstrated in front of the Turkish embassy. In Erbil, southern Iraq, the killings were protested Iraqi Kurds, At the protest, Kurdish activist Ali Mahmoud told the press that "The crime ... is a real genocide, a war crime and a crime against humanity, and breaches international laws, we demand that Turkey be judged in the international courts." We demand that those responsible for the Roboski massacre be brought to justice and prosecuted. We call on the US to refuse to supply the drones Turkey is seeking so that Washington will not be a partner to Ankara’s massacres of its own people and to demand justice for Roboski and an end to Turkey’s repression of its Kurdish population.
