"Flooding rice fields during the off-season mimics the way rivers once flowed across the floodplains like a liquid solar panel, letting algae and other phytoplankton soak up the energy they need to sustain a vibrant food web." CalTrout's science-based approach to managing California's resources demonstrates that with innovative management practices, there is potential to boost the depleted food resource in Central Valley rivers and help recover endangered fish populations. 2021 is a defining year for California Trout. It's our 50th anniversary - a chance to reflect on what we've achieved together but, more importantly, what we'll accomplish in the next 50. Our vision is of a California where water flows free, clean and cold from headwaters to sea a vision of watersheds teeming with native, wild fish whose resilience and diversity match that of the people throughout this great state we call home.

What Do Winter Storms Mean For Fish? Patrick Samuel, CalTrout's Bay Area Regional Director gives a report about what this weather means for fish. "Rain coming in waves like it is this week is huge for fish. To date, we are really behind in precipitation across most of the state. This sustained rain allows fish to keep moving and get where they need to go, both upstream and down, and avoid big drops in streamflow that could leave redds high and dry." Did you know? Southern steelhead are remarkably adaptive and resilient, yet they are one of the most endangered native fish in the country. In the early 1900s, hundreds of thousands of them returned to the rivers between San Luis Obispo and Mexico. Now, there are reportedly under a few hundred adults returning annually. Despite all odds, southern steelhead refuse to give up. They have adapted to tolerate warmer temperatures and keep coming back to their natal streams despite being turned away by man-made barriers.

We are excited to announce that six CalTrout projects to Reconnect Habitat, Protect the Best, Restore Estuaries and Integrate Wild Fish & Working Landscapes are moving forward thanks to grant funding opportunities from California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Fisheries Restoration Grant Program, State Coastal Conservancy, and Wildlife Conservation Board. Government grants make up 60% of our operating budget, allowing us to execute large-scale and significant programs that benefit wild fish and people in California. In 2018, voters passed Prop 68 which helps provide critical funding to allow us to keep moving forward on projects that support habitat resiliency, resource enhancement, and climate preparedness. Learn more about the six CalTrout projects that were awarded a total of $7,494,741.

When you think of California and all it has to offer, what are some of your favorite natural places? Is it the forest, mountains or maybe the beach? For CalTrout's field reporter Mike Wier, he gets the most enjoyment from our cold-water network of underground aquifers and springs. The Fall River is part of a vast complex of springs that well up around the Fall River Valley mostly due to volcanic geological formations surrounding the valley.

"The Corps’ signing of the Malibu Creek Ecosystem Restoration Report puts removal of Rindge dam closer to reality." Removing Rindge Dam would restore 8.5 miles of aquatic habitat for endangered southern steelhead on Malibu Creek and 9.5 miles of habitat on Cold Creek. #DAMSOUT

"California will have another multi-year drought," says Dr. Jay Lund, Co-Director of the UC Davis Center for Watershed Sciences, in a recent post from the California Waterblog. "California has immense hydrologic variability, with more droughts and floods per average year than any other part of the country. California’s water users, managers, and regulators should always be prepared for droughts (and floods). Eventually, California will have a multi-year drought worse than any we have ever seen."

If we had a time machine our first stop would be to fish with these two legends on Hat Creek in the 1970’s. Richard May and Jim Adams were two of the founding fathers of CalTrout and the master minds behind the first wild trout project on Hat Creek. We are grateful for the wild trout legacy they have left behind. #caltrout #foundingfathers #wildtrout #mindfishmonday

CalTrout has been advocating for the removal of the Klamath dams for 20 years. In 2019, we released the Top 5 California Dams Out report which listed the Klamath dams as one of five dams ripe for removal. During these 20 years, the Klamath has dealt with serious toxic algal blooms and salmon numbers have dwindled, threatening Tribal subsistence and the West Coast fishing industry. The dams currently block access to more than 300 miles of spawning and rearing habitat for salm...on and steelhead. Our partners at Save California Salmon are calling for an Un-Dam the Klamath Day of Action on Friday, October 23rd. This Day of Action is critical right now as the owners of the four Klamath dams that are slated for removalPacifiCorp and their parent company, Berkshire Hathawayare threatening to pull out of the dam removal agreement and break their promises to Klamath River Tribes. Learn more about how you can have your voice heard and join in Save California Salmon's Day of Action on our website.

While conserving and enhancing coldwater habitat has received lots of attention and is likely the single best strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change, few have focused on food rich habitats as possible refuges for coldwater fishes. Learn about Dr. Rob Lusardi's latest investigation into the question "can fish eat their way out of climate change?". Check out his article in the Fall Current.
